zephedrine drouhin (?sp)

Long name but this rose is so lovely I could not resist a photo - and thornless. The pink is really breathtaking. This is one bush planted a year ago and there is actually another bush 60 cm away from it which I just rescued and is now only 10 cm high but the two of them will be a power to reckon with in the future I think. This rose has been FLOODED periodically (as my house has no guttering by design and this is planted at the lowest point for the roof water to collect where there is a drain) and then ignored the rest of the time. No food as I have not got around to that part of the garden but when I do, I will jsut give her some manure and mabye some mulch.

It is a gorgeous rose - vibrant and with a wonderful smell and flowers forever.
David Austin loves this rose - even in winter it gave enough blooms for his daughter's wedding bouquet :)

In my neck of the woods is a bit prone to BS, but it is forgiven! Your rose has a prime spot and is doing you proud :)

When I got my ZD from Chamblee's 8 or 9 years ago, I was told not to expect blooms in the first year. And she didn't bloom but grew a lot. However, she bloomed from the second year on. After the spectacular spring flush I usually get a second less spectacular flush that goes on till July and then ZD blooms again very well in fall. Last year in that horrible drought she produced a few blooms in August; it was out of the ordinary and frightening. I usually have to cut off a lot of dead wood but this winter half of the plants were dried out dead wood; not cankered: dead. But this rose is so vigorous that there are plenty of new canes to replace the dead ones. In my experience ZD likes to be fed well and appreciates regular watering if rain is lacking.

you know, I am getting a bit sick of seeing everyone's gorgeous ZD!! :) I have had one for ten years, west exposure on fence, so, if she would GROW, she would see the other side of the fence is full sun!! 5 foot fence, so no drama getting over it! But NO! scrawny plant, own root from ARE, ten years old, and five blooms MAYBE a season, and STRICTLY ONCE A SEASON! no fudging here! canes yellow and die, I guess sun is too short, although noon on is full sun. DUBLIN BAY doesn't seem to mind right next door...AND, isn't she a partial shade gal??? ok, noon to evening ought to work. Anyway, I hate to sp her, my neighbor (an aphid's fly away) has a beauty that is on the east side of her home with a fence 15 feet away, so an even narrower pocket of sun, we bought them the same day, and va-voom, hers is like yours. I know east is better than west, I guess I ought to move her but there are few areas where vivid pink works for me. Please excuse the ranting, but geez, y'all sure are pretty! Ok, I am moving her tomorrow!! ANd NOT the trash bin.

Florence, I never get tired of that picture. ZD loves you! My roses have TRIED to teach me patience. For the most part they've given up on me except for Marie van Houtte, who has languished in her probably too shady spot for three years, still only about two feet tall with almost no flowers. Now that's where I probably should be giving up. Ingrid P.S. Hoping for pictures of your spring garden this year!

Mine begins blooming within a day or so of April 23 and gives me a good month of a spectacular display then peters out. As they say, the first year it sleeps, the second it creeps, and the third it leaps. The canes are easily trained on an arch, and having no thorns means people can come and go without getting snagged. It has a pleasant scent, about 6 or 7 on a scale of 10. It had no problems with PM or BS, but I do spray it with Bayer.

Looks beautiful and to think no thorns and a beautiful perfume, what more can you want in a pretty rose.
I love the aged timber on your house it goes so well with your garden and surrounds..

Thanks Marion - the timber is not aged - house is 5 years old - it is cedar painted with "weathered cedar" stain by Cabots. Takes all the yellowness of the new timber away. Just had a cabana built in the same timber and it also now looks "old". About to plant devonesisis climbing and 2 softies (miniature climber recommended by Deryn) to climb around it.

Thankyou for the beautiful pictures - now I am convinced I have two Zepherins growing on an arch - There is an Agatha Christie mystery with Inspector Poirot in which the murderer is discovered because she says the scratch on her arm was from this thornless rose - aha -she was fibbing - but the rose in the drama on TV was red, not pink.So I thought Bunnings must have got it wrong. Your pictures clear up the puzzle - they used the wrong rose bush for Poirot's moment of drama, - he called it 'the zeph', and it wasn't. I can't wait for min to cover the arch, as your zephs look lovely.
