I'd keep the gardenia over jackmanii myself. I'd just prune the clematis back and let it grow up into the sun as it wants too. A shrub in front of it should not bother it so much. Provided it gets enough water and fertilizer. None of mine are all alone in their locations....

Hey all you gardenia nut cases (me included). I have a deep dark secret...it's so dark that it would make most run and hide in fear. It creates the maniacal laughter that is heard in the psych ward at the prisons. I actually... BOUGHT A GARDENIA!! But, it was for my mom for mother's day. So ha ha ha! Fooled ya! I figured out that I would instead grow tuberose instead (the pearl). My mind is warping reality for me and when it's humid and the doggone tuberose bloom...my mind smells gardenia scented flowers. That....ARE NOT PICKY! That...actually GROW FLOWERS! That....don't just up and die on you before blooming and laugh their leaves off knowing that you are going to call a suicide hotline because of them dropping their $##@$ buds.

I agree with the "hybrid" comment since all most likely are so similar in the shape and other qualities of the blooms , though some may tend to produce larger or fuller blooms under ideal growth conditions or even leaves may vary quite a bit in size perhaps depending on hybrid variety , but other than that I guess the modern use of DNA analysis may be the only surefire way to determining varieties that have no tags. Still not available of course as over the counter , DIY test kits for home us lol. Meanwhile unfortunately , my very old potted specimen has finally succumbed to my bad habit of over watering I'd guess , since though they tend to love "even" moisture , they hate soggy soil, especially during cooler winter months even indoors.
