Organic Farming Course

I've just got back from the first week of my organic farming TAFE course, it was really interesting, the guy teaching obviously knows what he's talking about & I'm sure I'll learn heaps.

One thing though, he reckons there's an organic solution to just about everything, one of the exceptions being fruit fly. That actually made me feel a bit better as the most I've been able to do is control it & that seems to be the way to go.

He recommended this site & it's founder, Dr Elaine Ingham. I haven't had a chance to have a look at it yet but thought I'd share it with you.

I know a couple of Queenslanders who claim that a piece of white cloth, about the size of a handkerchief, draped over developing tomatoes, not only keeps a lot of birds off, but is great protection against fruit fly. The claim is that fruit fly do not approach from below. Now, I've never sat and observed the habits of the fruit fly but you never know. I'd forgotten all about it until the other day when I had a look at the BOGI site.

And SoilFoodWeb is a US company that does soil assays to asses the level of microbial activity.

I don't like wood chips in paths, but only because I saw what happens after, say, 4 years. In the beginning they suppress weeds. Later the soil in the path becomes very good, and weeds grow much better than in soil that has not been amended. I think that chips belong in the beds. Gravel, ideally, with weed block under it, should be in the paths. I have done reasonably well with old carpet too.

Well, since we are at it, you want a clear cogent message. When I speak to reporters, I write down my messages and keep them in front of me and make sure I say my important messages at least twice. This is an advantage for me as if the reporter sees it, I don't appear like a professional, but I am organized and my words are cogent so it works. Now. So for this topic, the message is maybe something like: The intent of the bill is a noble one: to protect our food supply. But the text of the bill, as worded, is unnecessarily burdensome to family farmers. Especially in these economic times. So the important points above: intent is noble protect food supply text needs revision Family farmers will be burdened So much so we don't want to risk any more jobs These 5 bullets show that you get it and are concerned about the consequences, but support the intent. Family Farmers is a powerful metaphor. You want action in this case. Education is for another time. Lawmakers get it. Tell them you want some revisions so Family Farmers are protected. Note also how the OCA text I linked to above is written. And how I differed the style of my sentences in this comment and above. Short sentences for the message. But, you can also use commas for when you explain a topic, so that the tone changes. Commas change voice tone. Short sentences convey a message, something you want to keep in mind, just in case you get an audience. Dan

sounded like a witch hunt scare mongering issue when i first readit and it still sounds that way, someones out to discredit organic farms in favour of other. anyhow it seemd to get results lots of chicken littles running around proclaiming the sky is falling. i dunno to me there is lots of animal manures used in gardens sometimes in farms and i can't even imagine getting anything from plants grown thus as the manures come from herbivours, and there are many e-coli's but not the one that can be catastrophic. though i'm no scientist i do not believe or see how a plant can gulp up material containing any virus or bacteria then pass it on to people. my knowledge of how food is broken down so those very fine hair roots of the plant can absorb it, just doesn't fit. now of course conamination can occur when polluted water is over head irrigated onto plants, so extra care is needed in washing or cooking those plants before eating. and in processing plants the same if there is contamination it can cause issues, but then again with any of the fresh stuff it generally says wash before eating. len Here is a link that might be useful: lens garden page

Ooohhh, that course sounds good.

Hhhmmm, in fact, I think Sarah should come here each day and type in all her notes and observations then we can all learn...

our local U3A ( university of the third age ) has course on horticulture. Im in the geelong area but these subjects are free so would be well worth any of you who are 50 and over to check out your local U3A. I dont have the time right now to do this course but I do the art course

The U3A sounds good, and only down the road...and free! Shame you have to be over 50 though, as I would have checked it out. I know Werribee has some agricultural and horticultural schools. I might see what they cost.

there's a course in farming for a small holding at the tafe in Armidale. I thought I might check it out, as long as it doesn't clash with my chainsaw and welding course, which may clash with the sculpture diploma. Life's hard.

Turn it up! You can do a correspondence course in Welding from Amanda! Of course, with stamps costing 50c these days, sending her your homework could be expensive.
