I would also want it to compete with the Norway maple to slow its growth ===>>> yeah ... good luck with that ... lol ... if the most invasive weed on earth ..... grass ... wont grow under a norway.. good luck with anything else ... if we are to presume that a tree is twice as large underground.. as above... how are a couple little vines going to slow it down ... regardless ... give it a try ... if you can provide enough water for the vine.. in excess of what the tree will steal ... and the vine actually can become established and thrive.. it might be a really cool affect ... i would recommend not amending the soil .... and never watering the vine alone.. bare rooting it.. and planting in only in the soil removed in digging the hole ... you might get it going.. but any amendment .. fertilizer.. or water specific.. will encourage the maple to come fill the hole you dug with feeder roots.. and in the long run.. strangle the plant .... i know this for a fact from growing some odd 1500 hosta under a myriad of trees ... maples .. among others ... are super competitors .... and .. given time.. will take everything that other plants might need ... and norway is their king ... good luck ken ps: even if you decided to increase your odds by trying to grow the vine in a 20 gallon pot.. under the tree.. on top of the native soil .... within a few years.. the roots of the tree will fill the pot.. these darn things arent even limited to mother earth .... maybe they are aliens ...

I've read this thread now three times over the past four years. I'm still trying to get rid of a trumpet vine I didn't even know I had when I moved into a lovely house with a mature garden. The previous owner must have gone nuts trying to pull the shoots - I certainly am! Like one of the posters above, mine is running along a decorative fence and trellis. I've tried digging deeper and deeper to find the source, found one (maybe?) and more just popped up in it's place!!!! To complicate matters, I 'think' I have some sort of root-boring pest. The year after we moved in on of eight large (12 feet maybe) lilac bushes quit producing and dying. The next year I pulled three out of the ground with my bare hands - no roots left! Is it the vine - or is it a pest? My rose vines have also died, and now, the remaining four lilacs - located about 30 feet away, are also dying. I'm down to two of the original eight, sadly. Now I have this barren space in my garden, and I am skeptically staring at it with about $60 of blueberry bushes waiting to be put in that same ground... Any advice on getting rid of this vine (and this pest) once and for all is desperately welcome!!!

Trumpet creeper probably doesn't have a chance up here in Pennsylvania. The deer eat everything that isn't glued down ... LOL I have a honeysuckle climbing up a cliff that looks OK, but it dies back in winter. So do the clematis I have growing up deck posts. I have a climbing oak-leaf hydrangea that doesn't really die back, but it takes a long time to get established and even longer to bloom (Five years and counting. Sigh). I have a couple of hummingbirds that return every year just for the annuals I plant in pots on our deck. You might want to consider a glorious spread of annual flowers at the bottom of the wall, and a climber that isn't necessarily a summer show-stopper but has other attributes.

There are two kinds of butterfly attracting plants - those whose flowers attract them to sip, and those whose leaves attract them to lay their eggs. The caterpillars eat the latter, so they are called "larval food plants". Bower vine (Pandorea jasminoides) would attract all butterflies to its flowers. The Morindas, Sweet Morinda, (Morinda jasminoides) and Veiny morinda (Morinda acutifolia)have wonderfully butterfly attracting flowers, and follow them with bird-attracting fruits - very good value! The famous butterfly larval food vine is the Birdwing Butterfly vine, (Pararistolochia praevenosa), which attracts the enormous and glamorous Richmond birdwing butterfly. I believe that Blood Vine, Austrosteenisia blackii is a valuable butterfly larval food plant - check the internet to find out what sorts like it. It does get very big, though, and might be too much for your garden. All the Parsonsias (the Monkey Rope Vines) are larval food plants for blue tiger and black crow butterflies. You won't get blue tigers every year as they don't get this far south every summer, but they are lovely things when you can get them. Parsonsias are plain green plants whose flowers and fruits don't stand out particularly, but are very hardy, fast-growing no-nonsense green screens. Zig-zag vine(Rauwenhoffia leichhardtii) is one for blue triangles, and has the bonus of edible fruits. Native clematis, particularly the very sun-resistant Clematis pickeringii is one of my favourites, because of the ornamental flowers and seed-heads, but I don't know if it has butterfly-attracting qualities.
