Here is Bonica again

Well, my Bonica with the 6 foot growth flowered right on to but before I cut the flowers away the long shoot had new shoots popping out along the length of it, all nice and strong and some have little flower buds on them

My question is, does it want to be a climber and let it do it's own thing or should I cut it off and keep it under control.

Gosh that Bonica of yours is a fast grower Marion.
My Bonica is so slow this year its just getting its first flower.
Is it a climber, mine is only a patio rose so very tiny in the growth a hard decision.
Your un-named Pink looks a little like my David Austin "Mary Rose" but plenty of others look similar.
It could be some kind of David Austin Rose have a look at the link below, so many there.

Hi Marion,
Whether to cut the cane back on Bonica is up to you.
It is what you prefer from the rose shape-wise etc.
As it does have support behind it I would be inclined to leave it and see if it sends up similar canes.
Your little rose is gorgeous and maybe an old type?

Julie, how interesting! It is good to know that Bonica is flourishing for you. I believe you live near Bald Peak? That's not far at all from Portland. Thank you for illustrating how rose success can vary even across short distances when climates also vary. I wonder what magic ingredients over there in your neighborhood prevent Bonica's blackspot. You mentioned wind, and maybe air circulation is indeed the key? We surely must experience similar rainforest conditions, suffer the same strains of blackspot fungus and slog through the same kind of heavy clay soil. I haven't grown Bonica for over 10 years and have noticed that changing weather patterns/climate changes have produced more diseases or different types of diseases on some roses and less on others. I wonder if Bonica would fare better in my current garden. Food for thought! Carol

I don't have it myself but I've observed many plants of iit over the years. Here it tends to have substantial black spot at first and then become fairly resistant as a mature plant. I don't know if that will happen in your case. Since it is hardy in your zone, it will survive even if it defoliates the first year. It does have a good plant habit, attractive foliage, pretty flowers, and good repeat.

1.The flowers are 3.5 inches across; 2. There are no light patches on the flowers; they are the same pink throughout (no shading); true color is the lighter pink you see, not the quasi-red; 3. It was cane hardy to the point that the old cane (single) produced buds this spring. There is a new cane (with the flowers you see) that came up from the roots, so I'm assuming it's not a grafted rose; 4. Last winter was terrible. We had a very warm spell in December then a cold snap with no snow; I put straw around the roses. I don't think we got to -10 degrees below zero last winter in Chicago-area; 5. The growth habit is what I would describe as "somewhat bushy" (or it would have been had had a deer not eaten the buds and new side shoots earlier in the spring); it is approximately 2 3/4 - 3 ft. in height. 5. The stem is fleshy, with no pricklers down about 8-10 inches; thereafter they are widely-spaced, downcurving. Should I take a photo of the stem and underside? Thanks for responding!

For years, I grew six Royal Bonica plants as a small hedge at my previous home. They were wonderful roses, taller than Bonica82, with a slightly darker pink color and a bit different in the bloom structure from Bonica82. The blooms were a little larger, too. These plants were grafted on Dr Huey. They were among my first roses, and I had absolutely no problems with them. Several years ago, I wanted to grow Royal Bonica again, and I had to order it from Hortico, so it was grafted on multiflora. There are some differences from the plants on Dr Huey, and I don't like them. This newer plant is is wider and shorter, and the blooms have a pink I'm not wild about. The blooms themselves just don't look as good in structure. It's hard to describe, but multiflora rootstock was not the best choice for this rose in my alkaline soil (other roses do fine with multiflora, some don't--it's a tossup). The differences aren't so great that I would dig up the rose, but I'm a little disappointed. Thanks MM and Sandie,
The growths are so vigorous on the new shoot, more so than on the older ones, I think I will tie it up and let it go and see what happens, all the new shoots from it have flower buds on them so it would be a shame to cut them off wouldn't it ?

I have a newly aquired rose just like yours.It came from a garden in Buderim from a man who had propagated dozens from cuttings.He's lived there since Adam was a boy and probably has only about eight or ten rose varieties.One of them was brought over from England by one of his ancestors in 1860.
Anyway he was kind enough to give us some cutting material and some bare roots too.Most of them, including the one like you have, look like china roses and we also aquired one tea which has since turned out to be Hugo Roller.The little china roses thrive on their own roots.
Sorry I couldn't help with the name as my knowledge of rose varieties is not that great.I'm can only suggest that, if it's the same rose I have, then it looks like a china, grows like a weed and is probably fairly widely distributed and therefore the name will probably not be too hard to track down.

Thrip, the little pink rose, sure is prolific, I was given my piece by someone who was given a piece and so on down the years. It is very easy to grow from a cutting, just stick a bit in and off it goes.
Wonderul. Wish I was doing as well with others I am trying to grow.
