Ranunculus

Its been a great Season for the Spring Bulbs here in Brisbane.

These were growing in large pots at the bottom of the back steps.

They have all finished now and I have planted Salvia, Petunia, Dahlia and Static in their place for Summer flowering blooms.

I wonder if the cold winter and cooler spring are why the bulbs are so good now? Anyway, they're looking great--lovely pics.

In general being bare and outside of the dirt, is a stressful time for most plants. I wouldn't count on much extra wiggle room than normally provided. Indeed, there are several "bulbs" (usually corms or tubers in actuality) that simply do not do well at all if bought in a dried state (snowdrop, cyclamen, eranthis to name just a few). Such are best bought from nurseries that specialize in them and ship them in moist media. I can't say ranunculus are like that...I dont' grow them...but the possibility exits.

You unearthed the ranculus bulb and it was healthy or was it the freesia? If it was ranculus and the bulbs look fine, I would keep the soil moist, but not wet (top can dry a bit, feel down with your finger and see how wet the soil is under the top layer) and then put in a slightly warmer or sunnier place. Until roots start growing the only loss of water will be from evaporation so you will need to check the soil before watering. I believe ranculus like heat and might wait for warmer conditions to emerge.

They might just lie dormant until it's cool enough to start growing. Hopefully they won't rot in the pots. I would not water and wait until fall to check for growth before watering again.

Cestrum it certainly has been a much longer cooler Winter that usual, though I plant these and Anemones in pots every March and they flower like crazy.
The Anemones usually start flowering in July and the Ranunculus about four to six week later and I still have a few hangers on.

They are good in pots or the garden beds and with such beautiful colours they brighten an area up so much .

Lovely pics, as always.
Ranunculus and Anemones seem to thrive on your side of the globe. Ranunculus have started to show here for the last few years, but I don't see them in the gardens, only seen them at the garden centres.

Thanks Inga. They certainly do seem to thrive here in my garden and pots, sadly I have never seem them anywhere else.
