I have a few English Mulberry cuttings and one of them has a pest on the bark which I think is a scale insect. It looks for all the world like a bud. What is the best way to control them please,

g'day fred,

1st you may find there are ants tending them or near the base of the tree, they have symbiotic relationship so ants need to go for any treatment to work.

then use white oil for the scale but use the white oil after the heat of the sun, see my remedies page for home recipe and some moving ants on hints.

with firefox life becomes a breeze.

We once had these 'ant cows' on our plums during a drought in South Africa. They are composed on a cluster of aphis that look like one bug but are actually a group feeding on the tree sap. They were actually fascinating to watch as the ants would 'milk' the cow for its nectar or body fluids and carry droplets back to the nest. If this is what you've got then it's imperative to get rid of the ants as well as the aphids things. Soapy water is the best to get rid of the aphis. I felt quite sorry to destroy such a relationship. On a folk lore side of things if you get infestations of ants it is supposed to be that you are neglecting family for work!

Thanks for the suggestions. I had another terrarium next to this one with the same pests, and I did manage to save a prayer plant cutting from it. The plant had sent out some new sprouts from the roots, and I kept one sprout with two tubers on it that had not or had just barely broken the soil surface, figuring that it would not have nearly the number of pests. Then, I soaked it in soapy water for the better part of a day before planting it. It had gotten a tint of brown by the end of the soaking, and I was thinking I had killed it, but it eventually sent up a shoot. I have not seen any signs of pests on it so far, but I figure I'll treat it with soapy water anyway to make sure. At this point, most of the ivy in the terrarium that is left has died, so I may have lost any chance to save cuttings from it, anyway. -Jmcat

NGU, Cutworms start out as small caterpillars that browse above ground on almost any green foliage, including small weed seedlings. In the youth stage you would not recognize them as cutworms because they are small and greenish and, in that stage, they are susceptible to Bacillus thuringiensis biological insecticide. As they get larger they change into the familiar fat, brownish cutworm mode and hide underground during the day and fell seedlings at night. I doubt seriously that you can "starve them out". When a cutworm fells one of my seedlings, I probe around the base of the felled plant until I find the culprit and destroy it. I get about 95% of them. That's worth doing because, otherwise, the cutworm will move on to kill more plants on successive nights before it matures to the pupa stage. Keeping your garden pretty much saturated with BT would be your best hope at preventing extensive cutworm damage. But you need to start that early in the season to get their youthful version. ZM

beetle like pest cutting down my plants

How big/old are your plants? I would expect them to be several feet tall by now and if so it would be difficult for this tiny 2 cm beetle to take them down. He may just be a coincidence. Were they cut off at the soil line? Think cutworms. Otherwise like so many others have posted lately it is rabbits or groundhogs, squirrels, birds, even turtles doing the damage. Go out after dark with a flashlight and look. Begin just after dusk, you may have to make more than one trip to find your pest feeding. When you've identified it, we can help suggest control. We have climbing cutworms here, they will climb mature plants to feed on buds and foliage - your collars wouldn't stop them. It might be helpful too in identifying likely problems for you if you could add your gardening zone, approximate area to your name. Easily done if you go to Your Houzz, Edit Profile, then Advanced Settings on the left. Scroll down until you come to the box to add your zone, finish with clicking Update.
