From pots .....to the ground

Hi all

We had a very busy day on Sunday and cleared a very weedy bit of the side garden and planted 4 roses.

We planted:

Golden Celebration( hope to train this up the fence)

Pat Austin

Perfect Moment

Christian Dior

So I have a tall and mid standard and 2 shrubs, all in red/orange/yellow tones.

They are all doing well so far,Pat Austin seems to have produced new growth already(is that possible so soon?)

Perfect Moment is a challenge ..a long story, so I hope this one will kick on now.

I will post a photo tomorrow on this thread to show you.

Exciting days...still waiting for the buds to bloom.

Hi Michelle you have been busy. I love those colours together they should look good. Most likely your Pat Austin was ready to sprout leaves at this time but it is amazing what a bit of sun does to plants.

Looking forward to your Pics, exciting days are right, but your roses down there will be still flowering away when mine have exhausted themselves...Cheers..MM.

Good on you Michelle. I am sure they will all look great when they are flowering for you.
I have just started on building up the soil for my Rose garden, will take a while for it to become good enough to plant them in then I too will have the fun of getting them out of the pots.

Hi AMy, and welcome! I did this, (though mine are smaller, tallest one I did this to was 2 ft) and with no special treatment other than watering it in reeeally well, bottom, then top..and putting them in a shady area for about 2 days. The ones I did this to had wound up getting lost in the jungle, the plants in front of & around them just got too big, and the poor babies weren't getting anymore sun! Anyway, they perked up and are doing great now..actually better than they were in the ground. I think it is due to the fact that they are getting more fert while in the pots. It's not all going into the ground all around it, other plants sucking it up..ya know? As far as the roots, I am pretty sure you can trim them with no ill effect, but let's wait for the experts on that one. I just noticed you are in SF, CA..they can stay out all year there correct? If I were you I'd make a new place in the ground for it. I'm no expert..I'm still pretty new myself.. I'm sure they'll chime in though:) Good luck! Daniella

Wow!!! I can’t believe a climber that big stayed happy and thriving in a 5 gallon pot. That‘s one AMAZING rose. I actually have to do the exact opposite with my White eden Climber. We need to renovate and it MUST be moved. I don’t have a perfect spot for it yet... so I’m trying to figure out how to move it from its spot where its been growing happily for 8 years... into a pot. If you all have any words or wisdom or advice... please send it my way.

Tough call in this case. The plant is now large enough to have roots touching the pot surface inside. If the whole soil mass will move as one piece, you could add soil to the bottom, do not add soil to the top. If your in ground soil has warmed up, you can plant it there and lose maybe a week or two to transplant shock. Eggplant needs a very hot location to do its best.

Pls provide a pic as your description doesn't sound like a Pothos at all. They have vines, not branches & have a trailing growth habit beyond starting out growing vertically. A pic really is worth a thousand words & we can't help you diagnose your plants' problems w/out seeing it, sorry. Need to see abt your 'roots hanging in air' tho' if they're aerial roots, one need not do anything.

Hi all
Thanks for your interesting and encouraging replies.
I must have the bug or something because
today I have planted from pots:

Fresia
France Libre

So that will add to the colour as well so now I have 6 varying sizes in that area all in the orange/red/yellow/shades.. Should be good.

MM Pat Austin has gone beserk! New shoots, foliage buds I'm very encouraged.

I will post a pic when I have fed & mulched--it doesnt look too good at the moment!

Here are some before and after pictures...goodness its hard work.

In the first pic the area on the right was weedy,
covering a tree stump right up to the brick fence
a space about 2-3 meters long along the fence.
This all had to go and then we able to plant the roses.
There is still about a meter to clear up to the
brick fence then we will be able plant
maybe a couple more
(you can see the spot in the second pic on the right.
Also we have to replace the mulch on the left of the pic.
I will do it later in the week...I've had enough!

MM.... Do you see Pat Austin ?Its the tall standard
on the right of the pic. All this new red growth
started a few days ago-after we relocated it from a huge tub.

Now I have 6 less roses in containers and cant wait to plant out more.
I now have 13 in the ground and the rest(37) in containers.
I want to keep about 10 in containers for a while
so I need to plant about another 27.
We need to get the soil prepared before we can
plant more in a different area.

I put the pot of spreading geraniums on the stump for effect!

Michelle It looks great I can see the new growth on the Pat Austin. Well Done! This is the time of year to do things with the weather improving. Best of luck with the next 27 . cheers pam

First off Michelle I must say I love those white pots with the tulips on them
And your new garden is looking terrific. Yes I see your P.A. that good that you have a standard
Not so much bending over when you have to prune, up off the ground too and less diseases.
Loking forward to seeing them flowering..Cheers..MM.

Your garden bed is looking very tidy and healthy. I think that the colour your new plantings should blend well with the colour of your fence.

I ditched pots when we re-did the garden four years ago and I must say that my plants have thanked me so much since they can get their roots out further into fresh soil. Also they are now watered with the rest of the garden on the drippers and don't get so stressed in the hot weather. Saves me time too!

Its hard work and when you get encouraging replies it helps a lot!
I bought more mulch today to remulch the rest of the bed (side garden) ...a job for the weekend.
Then that part will be finished.At last!
I'll post a pic when everything is blooming.
I'm also thinking of some screening for the fence.I saw some interesting sceening at Bunnings last week..brushed something that you put up against the fence.
I will have a think about that.
