Winter?? What's that? We have only wet and dry season LOL. Mine started as a climber on the side of the house. We just prune it back to about 12' tall after it flowers. It sends out long, green wood branches with the aforementioned thorns which try and find a hold to climb. It is these which must be pruned to keep it under control. I prune it about every 3 or 4 months just to keep the long growths down and hard prune it after flowering. Then I give it a good feed and enjoy it for the next few months. It flowers here almost constantly but puts on a really heavy show every few months. I gave an offset to a mate who trained it over wires to grow up onto his garden shed and the roof of his verandah. This has reduced the daytime temperature of both by about 20 degrees. As long as I live in the tropics or subtropics this is one I will always grow. Good luck, Brendon

I built a compost bin nearby with builder's block from my FIL's old milk house built in 1929. We have a bunch more to collect from eastern Idaho. Lined it with a some newspaper, then a wet phone book someone threw into our trash can next to our shop doors and also a bag full of apples! Must have been my eldest son or my hubby. I couldn't believe my find. My 12 year old saves the phone books for his BSA camp outs. Good to start a fire with LOL So I guess he missed out on this one. WE get extra phone books from our neighbors who passes them out in the fall. One thing my son did was have the nerve to take one of the blocks from my compost bin to place under his snowmobile trailer's tongue when he got back. I did go out later at night to get the dog food bag and some more newspaper. Then in the morning, I could have gotten more newspaper, but didn't dare. I wasn't expecting such service. They said they would just dump them anyway. So, I scored big time in the goal of getting other people's mulch and having it delivered. Where is that thread anyway?! I told them they can dump more of their grasses. They weren't done with this big subdivision and they also mow the shared grassy area and little parks. So I told them feel free to dump the grass too! When the grass gets long enough to mow. Plus I got the main guy's card to have him do some pruning and other stuff for me. I think the crew was amazed that this blonde haired lady, driving a ford clubwagon was willing to load it up with all the tall grasses! Let alone talk to them, as some people in this manicured area probably wouldn't bother speaking to them. I've got 3 Sparrieshoops (1xwhite, 2xpink) in very large pots along the verandah. They get morning sun only. They have been in for about 3 - 4 years and are okay - but the one I've got in the garden does much better. Two good flushes, particularly Spring. Mine are a bit leggy at the moment but are healthy and fairly resistant to black spot. New Dawn grows along a pool fence and is a remarkably healthy, disease resistant rose - spot flowers right through the year with best flushes in Spring and Autumn. But it gets full sun. White Sparrieshoop is a particularly pretty rose I think with darker stamens and, for me, is a more prolific flowerer than the pink but that might just be a one-off peculiarity. I'd try two pots if you were planning to cover the clothesline, but good luck - should look great! Barb

My previous garden was 10 years old, and we shifted to almost a clean slate here, with a few nice tree ferns and some rhododendrons. I decided I wanted to get there in 5 years this time, as I am getting older, so we bought large deciduous trees. The trident maples were $70 reduced from $120 as the nursery was closing. These are glorious at the moment in their autumn colour, and I will try and get 2 more big ones this year. The deciduous trees are the backbone of my garden so I tried to get them in first, but had to at least form some ideas about how I wanted it laid out. The garden has developed it's own character as i have gone along. I can happily say that, 4 years on, I have achieved what i wanted, but I certainly have many more things to do in the garden on a smaller scale. Currently we are building a fence to enclose the rear portion of the garden, which gets rather wet in winter. I prefer my mostly indoor dogs not to look as if they have been swimming in mud :-) This fence is creating many more small garden bed ideas that I will work on over the next year or so. My big achievement last year was the landscaping of the front garden, after we finished renovating the house. We designed the garden ourselves but had the hard landscaping done professionally to our design and closely supervised by me. We had the job of filling in a driveway along the front of the house. This now looks like an established garden after less than 12 months from completion. I feel that the most important thing here was leaving in the already established diosmas, buddleias, viburnums, etc and working around them. The landscaper wanted to start with a clean slate but i stuck to my guns, and I'm so glad I did. Artie you must be fairly young if you aren't aware of how rapidly time goes by. It takes much patience to make a garden. enjoy it as it develops and take many photos.
