Leea rubra 'Violacea' . Fresh-harvested March 2009 Gorgeous tender perennial with lacy purple foliage. It is a great indoor-outdoor plant for use indoors in winter and outside on the patio in summer. The purple color holds well indoors in moderate to bright light.

Carol, I know there are several spring bloomers. I have one that stays smaller and has a larger flower, but it does not bloom as freely. I love it still, though. The leaves on my Brunsfelsia (Yesterday, Today & Tomorrow) are withering, with many dropping off leaving bare branches which are also dying back. What new growth is struggling through is stunted and unhealthy. My neighbour's pawpaw tree shows similar withering and falling of leaves. We had a crop duster flying over our village dusting surrounding canefields a couple of weeks back and plants have shown the above conditions only since. There is a definite connection between the aerial spraying and pawpaw tree deaths in the area. Around the same time last year I had similar problems in the garden but had not made the connection to the crop dusting. I have been told that atrizine is used as a herbicide on the canefields to kill off vines without damaging the cane. In past years I had wondered why my vegepatch was not thriving when I had attached a soaker hose to the rainwater tank to ensure the plants had sufficient moisture through the dry season. A local irrigation company pointed out that it is safer to use the bore water (which is plumbed to the house) rather than the rainwater for human consumption as anything that falls on the roof washes into the tank. However, my query here is what can I do to minimise damage and help sensitive plants to survive, and it would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any suggestions on how to prevent the dust from washing into our water tank or what can be done to dilute or preferrably counteract its effects upon the garden.

Wow!! I had no clue Michelia alba grew that fast! Yours was certainly drool worthy. Mine is gonna have to b in a pot so it can go into the greenhouse as it freezes several times (normally) during the winter. It is about 4ft now. Was yours in full sun? It kinda looked that way in the pic but I thought I should ask. I didnt know there were 2 diff varieties of albas. I know there is also the M. champaca. I tried to start Champaca several times from seed w no luck lol. I am not sure which alba I have. It is grafted though. I got it from an asian supermarket that had all kinds of awesome tropical trees for sale and also fruits like durians and jackfruit. So hopefully they r reputable. I will take a pic of mine tomorrow. Goodness I cant possibly pick favorite fragrances there r so many lol. I do love nycanthes arbor trystis, jasminum polyanthum, nbj, certain roses, ylang ylang, michelia alba of course but also michelia figo is really nice too. Gardenias are one of my very favorites even if they are common lol. They are just so sensuous and tropical. My double rangoon creeper smells so good, I usually can smell when the flowers are open before I ever walk up to the plant and see them lol. MOO jasmine is nice and so is Solandra maxima. I even like moonvines. They smell like some type of floral shampoo. Probably forgetting a bunch of stuff.
