i am not familiar with this... but thought to myself.. scent varies over the season ... by late fall.. the leaves can be thick and leathery ... and not quite as fragrant as new shoots in spring ... so you got one good sniffer.. if you can define the scent.. with as much specificity as you did ...... but try again.. in spring ... if it should be IDd as such.. and worth keeping.. ken

Yes, rugosas are easy to propagate. As a guarantee, you can collect hips and store them in the fridge. Jan 1st, open the hips and take out the seeds. Put them in a small ziploc bag with some moist potting medium and store in the fridge for three months. April 1st you can put them outside. Since you live north of me, you might want to time putting the plants out later than April 1st. The main thing is to give the seeds 3 months of cold moist stratification. Rugosas are easy as pie to grow from seed. Of course, if you can dig up some suckers or get some pieces to root, you won't even need the seed!

Agree with previous posters. This looks like exposure. New growth seems fine. If they've already been outdoors for a week or so, I'd stick with what you're doing now and continue hardening off gradually to full sun and wind in 3-5 more days. Five days is damn quick. I take 10-15 days to get them strong enough for full sun and wind. We recently had 3 weeks of steady 15-20 mph winds with 35-40 mph gusts. Lost a few seedlings but attrition is factored into the equation. So figure ten days to full exposure and adjust your current hardening off to that. If they look like they're hurting increase shade time and slow 'er down. Cheers.
