I planted an own root New Dawn outside the property and forgot to prune it hard into a large shrub. It threw out tall canes which then bent over and when the side shoot grew, they made a Chinese puzzle out of the rose. Just make sure you prune it down hard each spring to about 6 feet and that will make it into a big shrub.

Climbing hydrangea is beautiful, albeit slow-growing and vigorous once it gets going. It attaches directly to the siding with it's suckers which means no trellising if desired, but that also means it trashes out your siding. Pyracantha can be espaliered to grow flat and you might also consider a climbing vine such as hardy kiwi. If you plant male and female, the fruit are delicious. I would try to espalier something, maybe even a fruit tree if the soil is good and there's space for a big enough hole. However, if your heart is set on a rose, I'm sure there are some that would suit your needs. Hopefully, someone with chime in with a suggestion. BTW, how deep is that bed?

I live in the greater Toronto area and my zone is also 5b according to Canadian ranking. Eden is not cane hardy in my garden and I lost her two years ago. However ND is but not a monster yet. I do have a few canes and I am currently training it against the wall. I use a tall tomato cage but I am also fortunate that the main canes are sturdy and self supporting. The thinner canes I use bamboo stakes for now but if needed I can attach to the wooded fence.

'John Davis' often frustrates folks by remaining in bush form refusing to spread its wings and climb, the solution is really good deeply dug fertile soil and liberal FEEDINGS! Vaporvac, my 'JD' had the largest thickest stems I've ever seen upon a far northern grown rose, I felt quite guilty saying goodbye, he's lent his genetics to a few of the roses I have bred, though also passing on the susceptibility to cercospora, which unfortunately a lot of roses are prone to at my location and leaving them starkly defoliated. The removal deed is done and a viburnum now owns the spot.
