Is Bonica acting strangely ???

I have been wondering if this growth is a sign of how big Bonica can grow or is it just a bit of enthusiasm after a good feed of fertiliser.

It comes from above some of the other shoots above the graft and has a bunch of flower buds at the top, nearly five and a half feet long.

Maybe you have a climbing sport? It would be interesting to see if it continues to go up. You would have plenty of people wanting cuttings :-)

Bonica can get quite tall here, I've seen a shrub of it reach close to 2 metres tall by about 1.5 metres wide. I think it would make an excellent hedge if left to grow tall. It does tend to throw out long canes - which I'm finding with a standard Bonica I won at a fete a couple of years ago.

Good thing you had a tall stake ready!

My broody hen's reaction to strange chicks has been panic--as if they have suddenly been thrust into another hen's nest full of chicks, and any minute the REAL momma is going to return and give them a trouncing. I HAVE had luck with having a broody hen who hatched out three chicks accept 4 more chicks the next day that I hatched from the incubator. As each one hatched I placed it under her, while taking one of her dud eggs away. They are at this minute 1 week old and progressing normally, momma is great. :) Here's what might work: let her brood some eggs for a few days, then one NIGHT while she is asleep and groggy, without turning on any lights (or as few as possible), gently and quietly slip the eggs out and the chicks under her. When done make things dark and quiet again so she'll settle down and sleep (babies too). But stay close and keep an ear out for screaming chicks if she isn't fooled, and have a brooder box standing by that night and well into the next day or so just in case. That may fool her into thinking she's hatched them. Needless to say, the chicks need to be very young, freshly hatched or just a few days old--no older, feathered out chicks. Just today I had ANOTHER banty hen go broody--one of my little old lady cochin girls, who really is too old for that kind of nonsense. Now I have 8 broodies! *whimper* Velvet ~:>

As sorry I am to hear you're having the same occurrence, I'm glad someones on the same boat. That's an interesting theory and makes complete sense to me. But my plant isn't affected by the day light, I have it under artificial light from about 6am-9pm. Which is probably a bit much now that I think about it.. So do think your theory would still be correct in my case? I mean there is a window in the same room as it, so I guess it gets some very indirect sunlight, but I wouldn't think that would be enough to affect anything. I will probably just go plant it outside, I got a spot for it I think. But haha yeah it is quite the pot.. it was the only thing I could find around the house that could accommodate the pawpaws long taproot and have holes easily poked in the bottom for drainage. But yes it should be fun trying to get the seedlings out with the dirt intact haha. Probably will end up trimming the can down.

Aw so sorry to hear you lost your girl -I know how they become beloved pets - with personalities all of their own. Some people have a hospital tank in their basement for this sort of thing - need only be a poly stock tank . However... I thought I would mention there may be something else going on besides just the heron .... as if that werent enough, right? The frayed fins in the photo are suggestive of bacterial disease which would be caused by poor water quality. It can look ok but still not be good for the fish - there should be zero ammonia and nitrite, very little nitrate if any. Tests wont detect too much dissolved organic compounds but those can be a major factor in poor water quality as well. Are you doing periodic partial water changes, how many fish? HOpefully no more than 3-5. Are any others exhibiting frayed fins? Try the forum at www.koiphen.com - its much more active and frequented by experts than this one! Koi can be a handful, due to their size. All the best to you and your fishies.

Marion how wonderful. I wish my two Bonica's would grow like that.
Mine are four year old Patio standards but they would be the smallest out of all my roses.
Your mini Sunset is very pretty, and sure looks like its name..Cheers..MM.

I had the same experience as Yvonne with long canes shooting out of my Bonicas quite regularly. Problem was, I found that if I left them on, they got a huge cluster of flowers at the end but the rest of the bush got thin and straggly. Once I started cutting the long canes back regularly, the plants bushed up again and performed better overall.

Well, I would have to suspect from the information given that you have a Hybrid Musk for Bonica. Perpetuation of misnamed roses is not unknown in this world. Personally I have never known it to behave like this. I suggest that you post a pic of the bloom. A detectable fragrance will prove that it is not Bonica, which is scentless, and possibly confirm Hybrid Musk, if any perceptible muskiness is present.

Thank you all, this rose growing is quite exciting and interesting isn't it ?
Lozza I went and had a smell and there is no perfume at all, which is sad really as I am hoping to get perfumed roses.
This is the rose that is on it now, quite and old on and ready to be taken off.

At Treloar's display garden in Portland there is an old Bonica which covers a shed. It's vast. I couldn't really reconcile that with the photos I've seen of Bonica, but maybe yours is like that one. Got a shed handy?

Oh dear, looks as though I cut it back or let it go.
Trust me to get a bit of a rogue to start with.
And to think the plant is still in a large pot just waiting for me to let it out into the ground.

Woah,I vote we get this monster mutation cranking.
Plant the sucker in the paddock next to a leaky tap,throw fertiliser at it every time you walk past, and hold on baby!
