Is Bonica acting strangely ???

I have been wondering if this growth is a sign of how big Bonica can grow or is it just a bit of enthusiasm after a good feed of fertiliser.

It comes from above some of the other shoots above the graft and has a bunch of flower buds at the top, nearly five and a half feet long.

Maybe you have a climbing sport? It would be interesting to see if it continues to go up. You would have plenty of people wanting cuttings :-)

Bonica can get quite tall here, I've seen a shrub of it reach close to 2 metres tall by about 1.5 metres wide. I think it would make an excellent hedge if left to grow tall. It does tend to throw out long canes - which I'm finding with a standard Bonica I won at a fete a couple of years ago.

Good thing you had a tall stake ready!

Thanks for the info. It sounds like the growth is a good thing (it is growing from the top of the tree and not the rootstock). It has continued to grow and it approximately 24" tall now. It is coming directly out of the top of the tree and straight up, so I think I will keep it around. Until now, the tree had mostly grown out instead of up. I had planned to repot the tree in the next few weeks, so hopefully my much bigger tree will be happy in its much bigger pot. I don't know why it picked now in the middle of winter while sitting in a mostly shady alcove to explode, but I'm not complaining.

Healthy adult monarchs will fly away, on their own, within maybe an hour of emerging from the chrysalis. They don't fly away immediately, they have to hang from a twig, head up, wings down, while the wings take shape, and dry out. They like to hang out and flex their wings a few times before taking flight, so it is normal for them to be walking around for another 30 minutes or so. Also, they will stay close and not fly away if it is too windy, or raining. If the weather is OK, they should be flying within an hour of eclosing. Two hours would be upper limit. So, I think that your monarch butterflies have some sort of infection that is preventing them from behaving as expected. Sorry about that. If you happen to notice dark patches on the green chrysalis, that is a sign of Ophyryocystis elektroscirrha, a common monarch malady.

Hard to say w/o more info, but the likely suspects based on the appearance of the leaves in the process of being shed are A) root congestion if you've never repotted (Repotting is more extensive than potting up - includes bare-rooting, root pruning, and a change of soil), B) over-watering, C) under-watering, D) a high level of dissolved solids (salts) in the soil solution if you don't regularly flush the soil when you water, and E) a reduction in photo load (duration and/or intensity of the light it's exposed to). I did some looking at your nutritional supplementation program and it looks much better than what the average hobbyist might choose, so you get applause from this quarter for your wise choices in that area. I think we can probably isolate the most probable cause if you want to spend some time in a back & forth dialog, but I have a hunch we're looking at root congestion, or over-watering unless you're a habitual under-waterer. Marion how wonderful. I wish my two Bonica's would grow like that.
Mine are four year old Patio standards but they would be the smallest out of all my roses.
Your mini Sunset is very pretty, and sure looks like its name..Cheers..MM.

I had the same experience as Yvonne with long canes shooting out of my Bonicas quite regularly. Problem was, I found that if I left them on, they got a huge cluster of flowers at the end but the rest of the bush got thin and straggly. Once I started cutting the long canes back regularly, the plants bushed up again and performed better overall.

Well, I would have to suspect from the information given that you have a Hybrid Musk for Bonica. Perpetuation of misnamed roses is not unknown in this world. Personally I have never known it to behave like this. I suggest that you post a pic of the bloom. A detectable fragrance will prove that it is not Bonica, which is scentless, and possibly confirm Hybrid Musk, if any perceptible muskiness is present.

Thank you all, this rose growing is quite exciting and interesting isn't it ?
Lozza I went and had a smell and there is no perfume at all, which is sad really as I am hoping to get perfumed roses.
This is the rose that is on it now, quite and old on and ready to be taken off.

At Treloar's display garden in Portland there is an old Bonica which covers a shed. It's vast. I couldn't really reconcile that with the photos I've seen of Bonica, but maybe yours is like that one. Got a shed handy?

Oh dear, looks as though I cut it back or let it go.
Trust me to get a bit of a rogue to start with.
And to think the plant is still in a large pot just waiting for me to let it out into the ground.

Woah,I vote we get this monster mutation cranking.
Plant the sucker in the paddock next to a leaky tap,throw fertiliser at it every time you walk past, and hold on baby!
