Strelizia nicolai - Bird of Paradise Tree

Managed to get some photos of Strelizia nicolai, Bird of Paradise tree. The flowers grow right on the trunk so are hard to get a picture of.

Great Plant how tall does it grow GH.

I think Carolssis is thinking of Mexican brid of paradise (Cesalmina) not Strelizia Nicoli. I garden in Phoenix and I have several of them growing in pots in the afternoon shade but I have seen them growing aroung older houses to some enormous heights even in the sun. I think that if you like them you should give them a try. Good gardening Rodica

Jeep461 Confederate Rose is a plant that likes water. If you can find a neighbor who has that tree any branch that is cut off will if just stuck into a bucket of water will take root. Strip off all the leaves and put a nice stick in water and keep in the shade you will see white nubs form soon then the root will not take very long before they are big enough to put into the ground. You need to keep it watered until it gets established. They can get over 20' tall and quite wide. They can be cut back to the ground each year to help control their size and shape The trunk can get to 12" across. I had mine cut back to 3' last fall and it it over 8' tall now. They bloom in the fall when the weather starts to cool down. In the summer months they will lose leaves when the weather is hot and dry but will come back in the fall with cooler weather and moisture. When I got my first start is was a 3' stick. Put this into the ground and it just sat there until we had a hurricane which brought lots of rain which knocked it over and had to be replanted. From all that rain it took off and ended up being about 8' tall and full of blooms in October, it has never slowed down since then so I have nice shade for my back window. I am a newbie with B.O.P. but mine is doing the same with top leaves. Mine is indoors by a south facing window in the cold months. I am expecting new leaves this spring/summer. I just recently visited a big greenhouse near Greensburg Pa . They had orange trees with oranges on them, and tender Ensete banana trees, Cukes grown verticly with little cukes on them, also big palms. I would just LOVE to have a nice big heated in winter greenhouse and have even a quarter of the tropical plants they had in their greenhouse. I need to play the lottery more often. Well, when I do I never win, maybe Grover Cleveland can give me some money (new lottery game) Moma needs a conservatory, or big greenhouse. Poaky1

Hi, I am growing several Orange BOP , one Giant BOP and One Ravenala Madagascariensis. I overwitered them inside, but I actually want to give them a try outside in a sheltered position near the southfacing wall of the house. I am growing Alocasia Odora (Elephant Ear) there and even if they lost the leaves they've been outside for three winters now and do fine. I introduced bananas last year and they froze to the ground, but they are actually far away from the house, even if it is the south side. Calculating the hardiness zone, with the absolute minimum temps of the past five years, the result is -6.4 Â°C. Which sould make it a zone 9. Still, global warming tricks could spoil a little bit the results, so I keep it safer consindering it a stretched zone 8. So, what about Ravenala? Anyone can suggest if it's best to keep it in a pot or try the ground not far from the GBOP? Thanks, G

so that's what they are!

We have several very large specimens growing in the neighbourhood - on one of the dog walks - and I thought they were just travellers palms gone wrong - similar flower bracts and my confusion about palms (my photo of a fishtail/foxtail palm) don't help me ;-)

It looks bigger and healthier than ours and more flowers as well!! It must be more suited to your situation...unless of course you feed yours (oops, really must give it something) What do you feed yours with?? and when, since it's flowering now I guess it might be a good time....Tina

Hi all,

MM, can't remember exactly how tall they grow, I think 4 - 5 m. This one is about 3m. Takes nearly any conditions from drought, poor drainage, heat to frost.

Yes Paradisi, they are often confused with traveller palms but grow in all directions, not just one way.

Tina, no I don't feed it anything though it is in a damp spot (when it rains that is). I think they do best on neglect.

It's a shame that you can't pick the flowers but they grow too close to the trunk and often are hard to see but it is excellent if you want something for a tough spot.
