Thanks tashkentensis and saltcedar for the suggestions, but it's not either of those. I did a google search for the two trees you suggested. Bboy is right. The tree is evergreen, but it does shed old leaves almost continuously, which turn a bright red/yellowish before falling off. I will try and take a picture of one and post it to facilitate its identification. Thanks!

The Maas folks are a great somewhat local (Seabrook) resource and provide a bit of background about the wide price range on their Japanese maple page. Though even they run this disclaimer: Remember, just because it is on the list does not automatically mean that it will do well here. You also need a heat resistant strain. Imagine they could give better guidance by phone or email knowing some details about your site. Looks promising as long as you can provide ample shade.
