Maifluer has the best solution given you don't want to hurt the clover. If you paint the centers of the dandelions with the herbicide, you should little or no damage to the clover, and if there is some, the clover should quickly spread to fill in any gaps. When painting it on, be careful not to let any drip from the brush onto the clover, and use a more concentrated solution than used in a hand sprayer. For example, if your directions say to mix 2 tablespoons of the weed killer per gallon of water, then mix it 50/50 or 40/60. When you put it on, you don't need to cover the entire plant, just dampen the center of the dandelion. Glyphosate will work well and leaves no soil residue that will hurt the clover. You can also use products containing 2,4-D or dicamba, although these can release vapors that may affect nearby clover (though it won't necessarily be killed). You may also need to make a couple repeat applications before completely killing the plants. Dandelions are particularly invasive where the lawn is thin, so be sure to correct the conditions causing thin areas to help prevent the dandelions from getting going in the first place.

In Oklahoma a lot of people want to live on acreage. Also for reasons that escape me they love to mow. It does look nice afterwards but spending hours that way is not my choice. But what people on acreage generally do is not worry about what is growing in the "lawn " and just mow it regularly. Green is green and we have droughts. People in the country do not generally water unless they have one of those septic tanks systems which also converts to irrigation in that area. They generally mow a large area around the house-at least an acre. because also there is fire danger and long, shaggy, dry vegetation is dangerous and also there are rattlers and copperheads and no one wants to be surprised so close to the porch. Depending upon where you live there can be safety concerns with not mowing. That said letting the remaining acres revert to wild flowers and cover for wildlife is lovely. Down the line if someone want to buy acreage you will see as many people who like a meadow or a horse pasture as like a vast, expensive lawn. It is also a service to the birds and insects not to use lawn chemicals. I have deliberately inter-seeded clover in my city backyard. I have a giant oak at the center of the yard and grass has a hard time maintaining under it. Clover does not maintain well once it is consistently in the 90's either but is lovely in the spring when the grass is just getting going. Some of my neighbors probably wish I had the more consistent weed free carpet but it cannot be done without heavy chemical use. I think we should minimize that.

Everything I read said that the day temp needs to be 65-70, but today is 73! I've been waiting for it to be a tad cooler. This weekend was the plan, though. I've been using Round Up, but didn't want to kill the K31 that's sprouting. I figure, if it's trying THAT hard in a shady area then I should let it be! LOL
