bored white cockatoos

I came home this afternoon with a little surprise on my lawn. It appears the playful cockatoos which visit often, had a bit of fun. Now I don't much like the ficus type tree that the previous owner planted either, but I'm not into pointless destruction! Natural pruning I suppose. They did this once before, as I watched during winter and managed to cover the entire lawn. They weren't eating anything, just tearing the foliage apart. They also got into my cyclamen. As you cn see, there wasn't much left, they even ate the bulbs. I suppose this is what they were after?!

Just bored I suppose!

I have read that cockatoos chew off branches to clean up their beaks and keep them short and Ive had black cockatoos drop bottlebrush branches all over my yard as they flew over (the branches fell out of their mouths as they squawked). at the time it puzzled me why cockatoos would be carrying bottlebrush branches, but it made sense when I read that. they certainly made a mess of your pots though

Yes they are a bit destructive, no need to get into your pots, what you need are some Noisy Miners around your area. They are very territorial and will not let any big birds on my block, they also live in harmony with lots of the smaller birds, like the parrots and Lorikeets.

The only good thing they do is prune the top of the natives I do realise that they make a mess but the trees seems to do better for it and it used to save us hand pruning, so now hubby had to get up on a ladder a few weeks back and do the work they used to do seeing our Grevillea's were getting very leggy. I remember last year they were starting to make a terrible mess of my giant sunflowers till the little birds drove them away. Marvelous what nature does all the same. Cheers..MM.

I haven't read any of Suze Orman's books, but I did watch a special with her answering financial questions on PBS a couple years ago. She seemed pretty on-track. We are totally into paying off our house early. We are on a 15 year mortgage right now and always pay a little extra. We are hoping to move soon, so we will have to refigure all of that, but the jest will be the same . . . moving towards paying it off ASAP. We don't have any other debts and hope to own our home free and clear by the time DH is 50 (that gives us 12 1/2 years). We do invest in a 401K, but with the tax shelter, we really don't notice it. It is 10% of our income, but it keeps us in a lower tax bracket, so the actual take home hardly varies. My husband loves watching the stocks and spends a lot of time on such websites as the Motley Fool (A site for people who do their own investiing without stockbrokers), but other than a few very small stocks, he hasn't done much with it. He knows he has to answer to me! LOL! I was thinking about the gal you listened to on TV about investing and saving money. There was a local guy here in Spokane that did a weekly show on investing and financial strategies. He went to our church and in reality he was one of the most financially screwed up people I knew and they even filed bankruptcy! I did some graphic design work for him and nearly had to take him to small claims court before he paid . . . even so we ended up involving the pastor as a mediator! So I guess it was the old "those that can't learn, teach"! It would be interesting to peek into the lives of other "financial gurus" and see if they practice what they preach. Brenda

Ahh, yes, that first photo. I had that as inspiration for my bedroom a few years ago. awm beat me to it, but lighting is what makes picture #1 so fabulous. Besides the photos being professionally lit, there is natural light coming from more than one direction in the room. The bedroom I had when I was looking at this photo had a gigantic atrium window on one wall. There were no other windows in the room. The room had plenty of light but it was only coming in from the one direction which caused shadows on the wall when the light hit any object in the room. Now think about that for a minute. (This is exactly when I had my a-ha moment). I painted the color that the room is painted in photo #1 on a sample board. And then moved it around. It never looked like the cream. It was always a gray because of the shadows. So that's when I had to abandon this wall color for my room, and go with a color that would look right (I think I ended up with Eagle Rock or something around that one). So, if you have the right lighting, then you can pull this off. And I agree that textures are what gives interest, and remember that metals are colors too, and will give you another layer of your color. Good Luck!

Thank you so much, Lydiasmomma! Yes those metal cabinets with the drainboard sinks are charming. I have to admit that we were pretty hard on the enamel finish though, and the former owners must have been, too. I adored the drainboards, but not trying to keep the sink portion looking nice. Bar Keeper's Friend was the only thing that kept it decent, and even then it seemed tough on it. I about choked when I found out that the sink could have lead in it too. But then I decided we weren't going around licking it, so hey. What I'm really trying to say is, enjoy your new sink! : ) Yes, the exposed beam was absolutely structural. We had to jack up the house after we moved in, and when we did so, we watched the areas where it was pegged together (that had come loose as the house sagged) go back together tightly again. Whoa.

I don't think it's been mentioned yet, but a big part of the appeal of an all-one-height peninsula (the biggest part, in my opinion) is that you then having a deeper counter to work on. I've got one 30" stretch of counter, and it's amaaaazing. I wish I had 30" or deeper counters everywhere in the kitchen. It's just so nice to be able to place something in front of you and still have ample room in front of it to work. I've never heard that a double-height peninsula is dated. And certainly not that what you're considering -- which is probably closer to a pass bar or a half wall -- is dated. It took me four seconds to find a bunch of examples of updated kitchens with that feature: The same search also turned up this shower, which has nothing to do with anything except that now I want it: I also don't think it's been mentioned that a key function of a raised bit behind the counter is containing water/liquids so they don't drip down back of your peninsula. If you don't have a sink on the peninsula, it's less of a concern, but usually you want a 36" deep counter or deeper if you're not going to have any sort of retaining wall behind a work counter. The extra depth makes it less likely something will end up spilling down the back. That said, our peninsula is only 26" deep (all one level), and I'm still very glad to have it even though we do get drips down the back sometimes. (We didn't have a lot of flexibility with our layout, so somewhat-better-yet-still-deeply-imperfect was as good as we were able to get it.)

Yes destructive there are we had a flock of them some years ago took all my Peas off the bushes and ate them and my beans and the fruit not ripe yet
,Glad they left us after two years.

What a pity, but you are lucky to have lovely birds come to visit. You will know not to leave your plant pots in the same place in future - maddening, isn't it?

yep they are vandals along with the corellas made the mistake of allowing a couple of sulphur cresteds to share the seed i put out for other birds next thing we had a flock of 40 of them and when the seed alocation for the day ran out they ripped up the lawn looking for any scrap of seed they could find and when they couldn't find any they tip pruned all trees irking my neighbours in the process and ripped all the orchids and broms off the trees.
