roses grown in this manner... in that small a pot.. with that big a flower.. are 'forced' for instant gratification ... and impulse sale... and VERY HARD to keep alive... if for no other reason.. for the sponge-like peat media used in the pot ... which is very useful in the greenhouse.. but hard to work with in the home ... see if you can get it thru to fall.. without killing it ... harden it off to sunlight... and plant it in the garden ... in mid to late fall ... and see if you can get it to winter over... in the mean time.. remove all spent flower buds ... to encourage new flowers to form and bloom .... and dont drown it.. roses are not semi-aquatic.. lol ... ken

I wouldn't say it isn't hardy...wild canadensis is so hardy here that it usually blooms in Dec (and anytime we have a couple weeks above freezing)...it'll be the last thing to stop blooming and the first to start in spring. It naturally occurs from the Canadian border down to the Gulf... Give it a sunny place, protected from winter winds, and good drainage...and it might surprise you. And if it fails, accquire a pure verbena canadensis...it's a bit muddier a purple than homestead, but quite hardy and quite similar. They both need excellent drainage in winter.
