Bad Hair Day.

I took this photo last week when we were having those terrible hot and windy days, I can relate to this. Cheers..MM.

Since then we have had a bit of rain, we got another 19mm.this afternoon and the plants are loving it.

Asplenium australasicum " Crows Nest Fern":

Two of my new girls, they are about 5mts old and it was the first time they had seen rain last week.

Dixie and Pixie:

This Canna lily has popped up since the rain its a newie so I have yet to see the colour of the flower.

Tropicanna:

These orchids always seem to be flowering they liveon the bark of the gum trees amazing how they survive.

lovely shots.
When I read "bad hair day", I was hoping that you were talking about a daisy with weird petals which I called "bad hair day" daisy.
I was hoping because I lost mine and I was going to beg a piece to see if I could grow it.

I'm going to have to watch it very closely as it blooms. It could very well be two plants, together, but there are stalks of red throughout the clump. There are stems with multiple blooms on them and at very different levels of the plant. It will be definitely interesting to watch it progress over the next week. The red one is really pretty. I wonder what will happen if the two get cross pollinated and seed is taken from either color of the flowers? Shauna

I'm no help with ID's, but those pics are really nice ones! You're lucky to get all those hummingbirds! I'm in Medina Co. and not seeing many now. I'm having trouble with the nigthtime critters either knocking my feeder down or spilling all the nectar out.

It most likely is an older baby cardinal. The photo above is a very young bird. What you have described sounds like a bird that is at an age between the fledgling photo above and an adult. We have many here in NJ and it took me awhile to figure out what they were. It takes some time for there color/markings to come in. They have a similar pitch to their call as an adult, but the pattern is a "tweet tweet tweet" or "peep peep peep". They are very vocal when hungry and the parents are usually close by. We had a mating pair that had a female and male baby. The father would constantly be feeding the male, but the female baby was so much more self-sufficient. She would eat seeds off the ground with her mother. Eventually the mother went over and gave the male baby a peck. It was hilarious!!

Humidifier, humidifier, humidifier! It will make all the difference in the world. If you have gas-forced air (as I once did) you can get a furnace-mounted humidifier that ties directly to your water line (no refilling) and shuts off and on according to settings you program. My husband and I got one of these a few years ago and paid about $350. If you have radiators you can buy a whole-floor humidifier that also turns off and on according to the humidity levels in the air. I just bought a Bemis for about $200; it needs to be refilled every day or every other day. These might be pricier than you want to spend but here are the beenfits: The extra humidity will immediately stop the static problems with your cat's fur; your skin, eyes, nose and sinuses will not get dried up when the heat is running (it even helps my husband with his snoring) and the extra humidity is supposed to be good for any wood furniture and fixtures you have in your home.

Really does look like a bad hair day. I'm hoping my crucifix orchids survived from a puppy attack. I have them in and around a hollow log. What colours do you have?

I love Pixie and Dixie. I gave up naming my chooks, too many looked the same.

The plants really look good after a bit of rain.

Hi GH I only have orange and a pink C. Orchid.
I agree with you about naming chooks when I have more that twelve I give up.
But we only have the four, and they are a little different in colouring, so easy to reckonise.

I supposedly have about five different colours of Crucifix orchids...I say "supposedly" because the only ones that have ever flowered for me are the ordinary orange and a deep pink which I noticed only the other day.
I can't work out what I'm doing wrong....too much water? not enough water?

All lovely MM, could we expect anything less? I think not. Next time you are throwing your over supply of cannas in the bin, spare a thought for me. I have a fence line I am trying to fill with cannas of any kind. I will send all post costs.

That would be lovely MM. I have cuttings of Pink summer snow, one of my Donelle's roses in for you. A very pretty little rose that goes from dark pink to light pink to snow white. A delightful climber and unfryable too.
Does the bad hairday plant form a bean pod. I have a tree here I am trying to identify.

Seeing your chooks makes me want to get a couple of them, nothing nicer than a hen scruffling and talking as she goes.
Grandkids have changed towns now and Henry has planted the chook yard with veges, so I guess I had better resist the urge.
Your plants are great and wasn't the rain wonderful, better than all the hand watering .
