I have cannas, too. I just emailed you on seed exchange forum.

This is just a guess... But perhaps it's a tamarind (Tamarindus indica)? The foliage looks a little off tho. Here is a link that might be useful:

Peggy, I used to find peanuts in my beds - an elderly neighbor put them out for the chipmunks. We have only a small population of chipmunks, no squirrels, but I can't be sure scrub jays weren't planting those peanuts :) In any case, no harm done, they don't germinate at least. I do find little clumps of sunflower seedlings regularly in some very odd places and often in my pots. Now there's no way sunflowers are going to grow in a 4" pot already holding a plant or rooted cutting, clearly the chipmunk didn't think that one through.

If there's a choice, I'd go with no flowers also. It takes a lot of the plants energy to produce flowers and/or fruit. When newly planted, you want to have the plant putting all of it's energy into establishing it's root system. Often the flowers abort anyway as the plant will more or less divert it's energy into it's root system. Commercial potting soil works just fine, or you can make your own, but remember to feed it regularly when it's in a container. If you live in No. Cal, you probably want to wait until spring to do you first fertilization. So. Cal maybe be different. wanda
