trees & shrubs next a pool

I have removed 8 cocos palms in a garden bed between a pool and fence which is 4 feet wide because of the root damage to the pool. I was thinking of replacing them with cycas, bangalow palm, philodendron and Kentia palms. Is there any root problems with these palms or shrubs?

Hi Evergreen, you do not state where in WA you want to plant these plants. According to my landscaper son kentias are slowgrowing and grow and look best in the coastal areas of Perth. Bangalows look scruffy after a few yaers and tend to get the 'frizzle top' so do some cycads. Philodendrons have massive roots, some dwarf varieties should be OK.

Thanks Meggs I live in Perth will definitely not plant the philodendron maybe I should leave the palm idea and put in shrubs or cordyline at present the bed is full of cocos roots which we have to remove before we plant anything else. The bed will get the sun most of the day from 10am.

Okay - I have looked thru books and on the internet, and have asked at several places that sell plants, but now I'm REALLY confused about the tree. I would like something that would give us some shade. Palms aren't really my thing. My yard has bright sunshine beating down on it. I just put a new sprinkler system in. I love pinks and reds. I stay away from yellows. Hope this is enough info.

The various Ilex species (hollies), particularly Ilex glabra, which has some smaller sized cultivars, are often recommended on this forum. I. glabra (inkberry) has small white flowers and small black berries. I'm not sure if it's native to your region/habitat. -- wd

You could consider cypress, especially a new-ish cultivar called Monshell or Tiny towers. It is not tiny -- reaches 30 or 40 feet in height (as opposed to the 100-foot height of a traditional cypress). It stays very slim, only four to six feet in diameter. But a trellis might be more practical in regards to roots. pyracanthus has glossy evergreen leaves that absorb glare, takes brutal sun, is frost proof, has bland white flowers in spring, gorgeous non-toxic berries in fall, and can be pruned or shorn to keep it flat, if you need to walk back-and-forth in that area. It does have thorns, which is why you'd want to keep it in bounds. It is not without some shedding, but nothing that will make you as crazy as bougainvillea blossoms blowing into the water. You can get a lot of different Cycads, they would look great. Yep, I agree, keep away from Philo's. Pygmy Date Palm may be worth looking at.

One thing to consider when planting cycads and dwarf date palms is, they have spikes, and if you need to brush past them especially kids near a pool they can do a bit of damage.
Have you considered the dwarf or semi dwarf lillipillis.

The trees that kombi suggested would be unsuitable - the first looses leaves, and the others have shocking root systems - avoid.

i confess. not a supporter of private swimming pools. in addition to our low rainfall, evaporation rate exceeds precipitation rate.
