Sad bougainvillea?

i live in Bullsbrook just north of Perth
iv noticed recently my hedge on 20 or so bougainvillea are dropping leaves like mad

there is no infection on the dying leaves or the bush its self
leads me to believe its a yearly thing
but im reading around that they are evergreen

any help is appreciated

They are evergreen. North of Perth, are you on the coast or inland? Is your climate quite dry or peppered with a degree of humidity? Bougs are native to tropical, quite moist/humid climates, on the basis of the information you've provided about all I can think of is they need moisture. How long have you had them in? Have they been quite 'happy' up till now? More information and perhaps a picture of the plants might help.

I'm inland by 40km or so

I don't know how long they have been in as i brought the house with them
they are reaching 12 ft in places so quite a while
the climate is either hot and dry or cold and moist
we have had some cracker cold nights (almost zero) this year but no frosts

they have just had a hell of a lot of rain over the last 2 weeks and were on irrigation before that

to revise my last statement
theres no infection
the leaves appear to be dying from random places in the leave and moving out

probably not... maybe.. who knows .... but i presume it is in active growth phase.. with lots of new growth that needs a lot of water ... it can be done.. but it going to be an aftercare nightmare ... one alternative.. is to cut it way down.. and that way.. give the roots time to establish.. before it rebuds and gets going ... but to be sure.. i dont have any experience with this particular plant ... so lets see if that can be done with this plant ... if i were doing this... is would learn about propagation of such.. and propagate a few.. for FALL PLANTING ... if possible ... just because you make a space.. doesnt mean if has to be filled immediately .;.. you might grow some annual.. morning glory??.. in the spot.. until fall??? just an option ... in the alternative.. hubby might be learning.. that one doesnt work this hard on moving what might be bought for $10 .. lol .. took me decades to learn that lesson ... i am sure.. this isnt some rare hybrid.. one of a kind plant.. and i do fully understand budget... but again ... i would NOT do 8 hours of backbreaking work.. for $10??? ... good luck ken

Bougainvilleas love being root bound..they bloom better. Yellow leaves is usually an indicator of too much water...water only when the leaves look sad. They don't like alot of water and if you live in an area where it rains alot you really don't have to water them at all. They also love Hibiscus food every 2 weeks or so during blooming season. They bloom on new growth so cut the old blooms off. They are the only plant that you can plant them directly into the ground in their pot as the roots will find their way out of the pot over time. This summer here it was VERY hot, very dry and humid in SW Texas and they were beautiful.

I had this happen to an outland Bougie once. I pruned it back to live wood (green inside) and then it re-sprouted and has had no more problems. I do find that I need to deep-water it once a month until the rainy season arrives -- if ever. But I did all this in the Spring, not Summer, so you might want to wait until winter to prune.

I have 4 Bougainvillea trellis on my porch in an upstairs apartment that are not doing so well. They have plenty of sunlight, facing south, but are starting to lose their leaves and are looking sparse the last couple of months. I was watering them frequently, 2 out of the 4 were doing well. I was advised by a neighbor to not water them as much, I tried that idea, now all 4 are not looking good. I live in LA, it's January. Do Bougainvillea's have a season? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

The winter temps here in my climate just west of Tweed Heads, NSW, rarely drops to that degree, even so my bougainvilleas do drop some, though not all, leaves in winter. Yours might just be dormant, I'd give them a good scrutiny for any residue of insect/grub attack and if you find no trace of an invader you might just have to wait and see if they put on new growth when the weather warms. Down to almost freezing is a bit cool for bougainvilleas.

i may give them a hit with the same stuff i spray the roses (the name passes me)
might feed them some Seasol as well
the weather should turn around now
its never usually that cold but this year has been odd
very dry and very cold

they like it very well drained, thrive on neglect.

Yeah jumbuck, that sounds like a good idea. From the photo, ok, the odd leave is looking a bit ratty but that's to be expected this time of year. Overall the rest look fine and the stems look healthy.
