Hi again! I think I'm going to skip the "which species" thing for the moment, since you said about the leaves that they are wilted, curled up, and yellowish after a few days. There are a few fossibilities we can zero-in on. If you are seeing death of the stems or branches in addition to wilting leaves, root damage or disease is often a cause, and it can be made worse by over-watering (as Jenny suggested). If there is a fungal infection affecting the root system, it is made worse by the potting medium becoming too acidic over a period of time, as well as a too wet condition. Almost all potting media have a pH drop to the acidic side starting about one year after we start watering it. There are also a number of bacterial infections that can occur, and some work systemically from the potting mix to the roots and move internally throughout the plant. This also causes wilting of the foliage rather quickly sometimes, but most bacterial infections leave an oily and irregularly shaped soak area on the leaves. Do check for that. Again, I would check to see if there is death of stem and branches, and if you are unsure, just cut back a seemingly dead branch or twig to see if it still has a tiny green ring within it. If it has it, then the stem is still alive. If it is dead, keep cutting in short increments until you see the green ring. If possible, lift the plant gently out of its container to examine the roots, checking for any dead or rotting ones. We can't leave out plant pests either as a possibility. If you are not familiar with them, I'll be glad to give you a rundown. For rapid wilting, I would check for spider mites first because leaf curling is common. (Leaf tips also become dry and brown quickly on most plants). Spider mites are a pinhead size and some are even invisible without a x15 magnification. At the advanced stage of building their colony you will see webbing (but not with all species) and usually on the undersides of the leaves first. If the leaves of your plant have a distinct bronze colour, let me know and I'll share info about a new and very non-typical spider mite that is making its rounds. I'll be in touch! P.S. The second sentence of my last posting didn't make sense when I re-read it (isn't the first time either) but I think you know what I meant. LOL.

My faves...... *Nicotiana alata (common evening flowering white) *Datura inoxia *Matthiola incana (started blooming in 90+ degree temps!) *Clarkia elegans (Clarkia amoena does not have a fragrance) *Lilac *Blue Elderberry (Sambucus mexicana).....Native to Eastern WA. I'm scoping out seeds around the corner from me...empty lot. It's a matter of getting them before the birds do though LOL! They are still in flower and smells soooo heavenly :O *Common Milkweed (give it it's own area!) I've been yanking out runners this year 15' away from the mother plant...runners didn't start until year 4! *Phlox paniculata As far as foul smelling: *Pelargonium x hortorum *Ginkgo biloba....steer clear of females; their fruit are extremely foul smelling!! *Ligustrum obtusifolium (Privet) *Juniper (I think it smells of cat urine) Of course most herbs, however there is no smell until leaves or flowers(of some) are crushed, rubbed, etc. Some people think Catmint smells like cat urine. Not sure which Nepeta they have, but mine sure smells much more pleasant than that LOL!

Josh, you might want to try 'Confederate Jasmine' (Trachelospermum jasminoides) instead. I'm in 8a, too, and while they seem hardy here, and quite a few people have them planted, they don't seem to get out of bounds. At our garden center, I've noticed a tri-color variegated Asiatic Jasmine. No blooms, of course, but the foliage would be interesting, and the colors (I've just looked at close-ups of both William Lobb and the Jasmine) seem as if the Jasmine would appear as part of the rose. Asiatic Jasmine is mostly a groundcover. However, It climbs about as well as does a Toad (with difficulty). In other words, the Jasmine wouldn't go very far up the rose without your help. This, I would regard as an advantage. Because there is less green to the leaves for photosynthesis, I'm guessing that a varigated Jasmine would be much less rampant. Yesterday, I spotted something sold as "Evergreen Wisteria - Bush Form". It had lime/chartreuse green leaves and wine colored flowers (In August). So, this is apparently a cultivar of one of our native (less vigorous and 'ever-blooming') Wisterias. One of the selling points on the tag was its non-invasiveness.

Hi Gayle! I look forward to seeing you there. As a newbie, I'm guessing you can sure bring those bougainvillea's. I'm trying not to be selfish, so if some else has their heart set on them, no problem. If not, I would give them a new home! It's been a while since I have had one, but they are very nice. I might have something there that you would like. Several of what I have are very hard to kill! Tonya
