Hi Dawna, Recognize you from the Okie forum. Love your site with your wolves. Gorgeous! Nice to see you on here! I live right where zones 6b & 7 meet, so it fluctuates. This year, it has been like zone 8 most of the winter! Who knows what to expect as we are now seeing global climate changes. Anyway, (get off your soap box, Annie), I live on a high hill or rather a ridge that rises dramatically above the Cimmaron valley, in the tall grass plains. My house is high on the south facing, so I get lots of winter sun, and like where you live, the winds here can be brutal in winter or summer, except for my trees. However, I too have sandy soil, so have been able to grow many things here that usually are hardy only to zone 7-8. And my soil warms up faster than most areas in mid Okla. I will do as you say about the bucket. The only things I really take pains to mulch are my roses and clematis. My Daturas come back and I don't even mulch them at all. Mother Nature does with autumn leaves. My mother uses your technique with her Umbrella plants, and she is 22 miles farther north and east of here. She grows them in full sun on the north side of her house. You wouldn't believe how much bigger those Papyrus grow left in the ground all year! They grow to 8 feet or more and huge! It's like going to the freaking Nile river when you step in her back yard! I have no idea what the name of the Brugs are that produced these seeds. The labels merely say, "purple w/white" and "yellow". If I get them to flower, I'll be sure to post their pictures on here. I'll be happy in any case whatever they be, but if I do well with them and they are not sissy plants, I may try to get others. Are you going to the swap in OKC in April? Logan, if you still have those caterpillars, please find an alternate host plant for them. They are increasingly rare in central oklahoma. If you have any weeds in the nighshade family or have puncturevine or goathead stickers, relocate the cats to those plants. Tobacco hornworms love puncturevine and by orienting them to this grossly noxious weed, the resulting moths wil be more likely to be imprinted to the plant, too. Biological control!

Rosie (cimmaron), I have looked up the descriptions of Epiphyllum and Hylocereus in 'The Cactus Family' (Anderson 2001). Epiphyllum always has the stem tips flat; the floral tube is long, curved and very thin. Hylocereus has 3-angled stems (though I think they can throw some with 2 or 4 angles); the floral tube is relatively short and thick, almost absent in some species judging from the illustrations. So I would say Jancc's plants look more like Hylocereus. H. undatus in my experience will grow up trees or brick walls clinging by its roots like ivy, sometimes to heights of over 10 m. I don't think epiphyllums do anythging like that. Where I have seen E. oxypetalum it makes a multi-stemmed shrub about 1.5 m high, though maybe it can get a bit taller. As for 'epiphyllum hybrids', it's interesting to note what Anderson has to say: "One encounters numerous so-called epiphyllum hybrids, which in fact rarely involve species of Epiphyllum as a parent. Rather, these magnificent plants, bearing shimmering, iridescent flowers, are mostly hybrids of related genera such as Disocactus, Pseudorhipsalis, and Selenicereus."
