Sourcing 'Charmaine' Rose

Dear All

I am looking for a rose I purchased and gave as a gift about 9 years ago in Victoria, called "Charmaine" - the retail nursery has since closed. Would you have any idea how I could obtain one? The "help me find" UK site said and it was bred in England by George Geary/Burbage Nursery in 1929, and the heritage rose Australia list has it as 1934.

Any ideas?

Hi Charmaine.
I just checked my Botanica's Pocket Roses and found only one Charmain (spelt without the 'e' at the end). It is a "modern, modern, Shrub, Medium pink, repeat flowerer with an arching habit..... an English rose bred by David Austin in 1982". Unfortunately, no other of the name is mentioned! Maybe if you 'Googled it' (did an Internet search) you might come up with something more.

I once grew the David Austin Rose by the name of "Charmian" (registered name: AUSmian) which is a totally different rose to the one you are seeking called Charmaine. Perhaps the HRIA may list it as a different year perhaps because they record the date of its arrival in Australia rather than its orign? Not sure, you might try and contact the HRIA and ask them - http://www.heritage.rose.org.au/contact.html

Agree with Camp. This is a rubbish rose for sure. Resents pruning; the cane will die back with black growth. Had one nice bloon all year; the rest were small and not much to speak about. I'm not impressed with SS at all; mine's slated for the compost pile in the Spring. I've given it 3 years and it's time to go and make room for new Palatine arrivals.

Wi-Fi and Perma, thank you both- very kind. Wi-Fi, I can make the choice for you if you like- get Gertrude! Hahaha. I have Gertrude growing in a pot and the performance has been superb! Gertrude repeats flower very well, as you know the scent is amazing (Gertrude was all the rage at one point in the UK to make rose water- I made rose petal jelly for the first time last week and used mostly Gertrude flowers) and you can either get the climbing form or the shrub. Yes, it is thorny and the pink isn't as dark as Alnwick but there is a reason why I made so much effort to get my friend the Gertrude- I try to give no less than what would excite me. Gertrude is also a healthy specimen. Strange that Heirloom has stopped carrying it.... Indecision tortures me- I would go buy the Gertrude to satisfy the current plant lust. I would then prepare the sire for the Jude in advance (incorporating well rotted manure, compost, bone meal and bury some banana peels), cover it with some cardboard (held down by weights) to suppress weeds and then I would order the Jude now for November delivery to plant. Come next year, you will be the Belle of the Ball with your Jude blooms!! :)

Oakslesly -- Check the ph of your soil and water, and see what rootstock Palatine is using these days. If, like most of Ventura Co., your conditions are alkaline, Multiflora is not the best rootstock for you.

Helen, thank you so much for the suggestion. I'm flipping over to Northland Rosarium right away to gobble up Marianne, it is in fact one on my list. In case any others can help, I'm also drooling over Golden Buddha, Joyce, Janet Inada, Oshun ( I should have gotten this one when Rogue had them, I was waiting for others to come into stock to save on shipping, BIG mistake! ), October Moon and Treasure Trail. If anyone has any more ideas I'm ever so grateful!

hi was anyone successful in finding a charmain rose, with pink flowers,I lost mine recently and hoping to find another. if I can get a bud stick, rose bush or even a cutting would be great thanks

I may have found a source that might sell a charmain rose try gardenarium@bigpond.com or orders@gardenarium.com.au this season orders are done, November 1st is when to try ordering for a new rose. No nursery's in New Zealand I tried had the rose in, found possibility in Australia. good luck hunting
