My Redwing produce 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 inch in diameter bulbs. I plant my onions about 4 inches apart, because I do not want my onions to grow too large. I hate having to store a partially used onion because the onion was too large for a receipe. I think if I spaced the onions farther apart that they would probably grow larger. Mars looks like it is a little better adapted to your zone. Totatlly Tomatoes carries the seeds. I've grown it too but I didn't see any real difference between the two varieties. Burpee's prices have gone through the roof. When I first started gardening many moons ago, I only ordered from Burpee. Now they have priced themselves out of my budget. They carry an onion named Red Delicious but not Red Candy. I tried Red Delicious years ago but I don't remember anything about it's performance. I'd give the Redwings a try unless you are very limited on space. If I find any Red Candies I'll let you know. Karen

I was ready to shovel-prune my Red Wing this Spring, until I noticed that it finally bloomed! Wahoo! Not only that, but the blooms are lace-cap. Very pretty. I started this shrub from a little 4-inch pot baby and after 5 years ... voila! It looks very much like yours. Unfortunately though, I don't have a Viburnum in the area that flowers at the same time, however the berries are still beginning to form/swell. I have a young Cardinal Candy that will hopefully bloom next year and hopefully will bloom at the same time. Anyhow, about pruning. Once I could see where the blooms were, I pruned down some of the surrounding branches so that the flowers (and eventually the berries) will be more visible. Other than that, I'll try to complete any pruning (dead branches and some shaping (not much)) shortly after bloom-time so that I'm not cutting out next year's potential flowers/berries. I don't have that particular variety, just a fairly large European Highbush Cranberry. I treat is a bit like a multi-stemmed small tree, so the lankiness doesn't bother me. It's planted in a narrow bed along the garage with hydrangeas as the main companions. There are some rodgersias under it, but the main companion planting for the cranberries is a Polish Spirit (supposedly!) clematis that grows into it. Some stems of the clematis are kept short to provide color low down, but the rest I leave unpruned so they can grow up through the full height of the cranberry. They just made it to the top this year. I like the height of our cranberry and keep the bush trimmed such that it makes an arch over the path by the garage - i.e. I keep any side shoots trimmed back on the lower end of the trunks so most of the leaf growth - and flowers - are on the top, arching out over the path. Since the berries stay on all winter, it makes a nice feature most of the year. I can't find a good fall picture in my files offhand. I also can't seem to find any good winter pictures featuring the fruit, but it's a plant definitely worth persisting with and getting it right re pruning to get the flowers and fruit as a feature in the garden.
