Improvement of blacksoil clay

Hi everyone,
I'm a newbie to this forum and I need some help, please! I've recently moved to the Central West of NSW and have a neglected garden that is on a heavy black soil clay base. I've never dealt with this type of soil before and I'm after any helpful suggestions for breaking up the clay and getting it a bit more friable.

I'm working on introducing straw, grass clippings, etc but is there anything else I can be including? My ultimate aim is for a mainly native garden with the odd exotic from, say, Mediterranean or Sth African areas.
