All right, so my postings will probably stop here today. It was a great, sunny but coldish day here in Perth and I've arrived home with four more beautiful climbers: * Genevieve, which belongs in Meilland's Romantica rose class. Beautiful climber, beautiful flower shape, fragrance and foilage; I only wish David Austin had something similar coming up too. * Handel; you know everything about him already. I liked his look, refreshing scent (Iceberg-like, honey with almonds) and I know it's a very vigorous beast. * Climbing Charleston; great looking climber, beautiful dark green foilage with beautifully shaped, large single flowers in yellow and dark red combinations, that change their colour as they mature; subtle and nice honey and apple-like scent, foud in many similar climbers and ramblers. * Leander; I wanted huge English rose and this one fits the shoe perfectly. You know all about it and although I was thinking whether to go for Leander or Cymbeline, I decided to give Cymbeline another spot, which has still to be prepared well. Hope these choices will inspire some of you to give some room for more climbing roses. Climbers are special; they don't take space, but rather make it more beustiful, they add something natural and spiritual to our homes which suddenly become a place worth living in, thinking about and admiring. - Tom

There are several catch-22s when one is interested in crossing diploids with tetraploids. One is that if the hybridizer does not prevent natural pollinations of the pod parent and natural contamination of the pollen the true identity of any seedlings and their ploidy is not certain. Another is that for the cross of different ploidies to work, the seedlings must either be triploids or tetraploids. Many species have what researchers call a triploid block. A triploid block means that the cross of different ploidies produces more tetraploids than it does triploids. Nevertheless the end result is again that without examining the seedlings for example microscopically one will not know whether they are triploids or tetraploids (as long as "safe' [from natural pollinations] hybridizing techniques were used). Then there is the cultivar or genotype dependence of the results of such crosses. Some parental combinations might never produce any viable seedlings of any ploidy while others might. Lastly are the environmental effects on crosses of different ploidies. Temperature can effect whether a diploid x tetraploid cross produces any viable seedlings - higher temperatures increasing the possibility (even though the normal possibility may be extremely low). Arisumi scientifically studied diploid x tetraploid and tetraploid x diploid crosses in daylilies. He published his findings in the Daylily Journal. Anyone who is a member of the American Hemerocallis Society can download and read his article. Although very few modern cultivars may be triploid there are a couple of known triploids. VT Purple Passion (Pinkham-Li-Conev, 2014) height 40in (102cm), bloom 6.62in (17.0cm), season EM, Semi-Evergreen,, 24 buds, 4 branches, Deep purple with tiny white edge, yellow throat, velvety texture, confirmed sterile triploid. (Dakar × Black Ice) VT Spirit (Pinkham-Li-Conev, 2010) height 23in (58cm), bloom 5.5in (14.0cm), season E, Rebloom, Semi-Evergreen,, 15 buds, 3 branches, Burnt orange with maroon eye and ruffled maroon edge above orange throat tests show it to be triploid. (Pumpkin Prince × Pumpkin Kid) As well, 'Celtic Sunrise' and 'Forbidden City' were identified as being triploids by flow cytometry [Ploidy estimation in Hemerocallis species and cultivars by flow cytometry, H. Saito, K. Mizunashi, S. Tanaka, Y. Adachi, M. Nakano, Scientia Horticulturae 97 (2003) 185–192] 'Garnet Robe' was identified as a triploid by Arisumi - see [Triploidy as a cause of low fertility in "Garnet Robe". in the Hemerocallis/Daylily Journal Vol. 25, No. 1 March 1971]. I need a way to contact you. I would love Cream Sausage, and giant sunflowers. :) I don't think I have any large tomatoes, but I do have some slicer types, thate are big enough for sandwiches. @judijunebugarizonazn8 @Elestrial 7a & Rosie Friends, I have 2 Chantal Merieux which are very cold hardy!! They get BS, but they bloom spectacular and have great form in bushes & bloom profusely! They are one of my best florist roses as of May 2026, now! This will start their 3rd year. I will take them both to PNW. I think I am moving in June-hope. Right now they are both fully 3ft & leafed out, since they did well during our very cold NY winter. 2024 first blooms Judy, Love your very full bloom. Photos!
