Impatien problem

I normally have no problem at all with these and they grow beautifully in my garden room. But for the last several months they have looked a bit sick and the leaves are speckles with light white patches. Even new plants I have brought in seem to succumb to this. My outside ones are fine and they are grown in the same potting mix. Any ideas anyone?

Hi Shelley maybe you have a air borne problem there could be something in your garden room that is doing this to your plants, Also I know impatien's like the shade but are they really happy under cover at all times.

I would take all the plants outside and put them into the open weather permitting and bring them in later in the day. Have you been spraying anything in the gardenroom that could affect them. Are you over watering or over feeding them as things slow down this time of the year and dont need as much as during the warmer months.

What about the air they are in, movement helps, then again some plants dont like drafts, hot or cold, some like humidity there are so many things to look at, dont know if this is of any help but do let us know how you go. Cheers..MM

Thanks for all your suggestions MM. I havent been spraying anything. They used to do so well in there, perhaps it is something airbourne even new plants seem to succumb quite quickly whereas my outside impatiens are doing really well. I dont over feed or water if anything I dont do the above enough. I do start the plants off outside and take them in when they are doing well but soon they seem to be afflicted as well. Perhaps I will stop having them in the room for a while in the hope that whatever is in there will go away.

There has been some tiny white insects on my alocasis and my rainbow tree doesnt look too good so perhaps I have an insect or aphid problem. Even my azlaeas arent looking too hot. Perhaps I am not misting enough. Maybe I need to grow indestructable plants in there for now and try the flowering sort again later.

ladyrose- I have had luck with my regular impatients reseeding themselves- they don't come up until mid-May at the earliest, so counting back 6 weeks, I guess you could try beginning of April. I actually planted a bed of NG last year early- before the end of April- and ended up with regular impatients sprouted in amongst them. Be aware though if you want to collect seed...From 36 NG plants I collected 1 seed. They were beautiful though! From 2010 garden shots We did have a very wet winter last year, lots of extra snow in February so that may have helped the imps germinate

IÂve been growing impatiens about 10 years and still consider myself a novice with starting them from seed. So, in saying that IÂve noticed a few thingsÂ 1. The double impatiens (carousel is a double, I believe) have much smaller seed and in my experience I have a lot more difficulty germinating. I am not sure for the reason for this, but the doubles were the first I tried, and was heart broken when I got (not to scare you) about 20% germination. Again, this was probably over 10 years ago Â things may have changedÂ germ rates Â I hope are better. I now grow the Envoy series and get between 95 and 100% germination (these are NOT doubles and have much larger seeds). 2. The moister the better Â not WET but moist. I found the longer I kept the dome ON the better off I was. I use domes when I do cuttings as well Â and IÂve done MUCH MUCH BETTER. 3. In my experience I have found that they like to germinate at a little bit cooler tempsÂ IÂd say closer to 68-70? I donÂt even use a mat on them anymore - ! so regular house temperature works great for them. All this being said, this is my first year doing the new guineas Â so I will be sure to pay close attention to this thread. I donÂt have any opinions about the seed starting mixture (I have always used a germinating mix) and that certainly COULD BE what is affecting your germination rate. I donÂt knowÂ Although, I do have an opinion about looking at where the seeds are from and under what situation/environment are/is optimal. I find that to be TOTALLY the case Â and treating seeds differently based on this in my opinion an excellent practice. Nature knows best Â and unless you keep this in mind germination failure is highly probable.

Could be sunburn, but yours don't seem to be getting too much sun. Make sure they aren't getting a lot of reflected heat and are not behind glass. Could also be overwatering, they don't like to sit in soaking soil. Could also be fertiliser burn, they like some fertiliser but not very strong fertiliser. Are the edges of the leaves brown and crispy? Do the leaves show yellowing and drop while still quite firm? Do the leaves show discolouration from the edges inwards, or patches all over the leaves?

Use a very friable planting mix such as those formulated specifictly for containers. They tend to drain well. When you water, water deeply so it drips from the bottom of the planter and then do not water again until the top few inches are starting to dry.

Shelley, Could those tiny white insects be mealy bugs.
They seem to thrive where there is no air movement.
