I caught this image this morning while hanging onto the end of the hose (just won't bloody-well rain!) and thought it a cool contrast: Euphorbia fulgens 'scarlet plume', a winter wonder between April and late September, and Osteospermum, a few weeks of bloom right now in the first spring sunshine. Thought it'd make a nice photo.

A nice contrast Bill, and the red and whites are going ok at Geelong at the moment(sat afternoon) and its not a bad day-still a cold wind but a bit of sunshine too. It has been a long cold wet winter .I think its been good for the bulbs
and hoping for some warmth for the vegies.

I don't have experience with standing water. Heliopsis does well with winter wet and that amount of sun. Most that I can think of that would not mind standing water would be unhappy with dry in summer. If you could dig trenches and mound up the soil using the dirt from the trench.Would help protect crowns. Maybe use straw when ground begins to dry. Mulch is to expensive for me and straw goes a long way. I also so have a no water area. Plants have been loving the straw. Other wise there are some pretty grasses that might work. Maybe tall verbena or rudbeckia hurtia or something that reseeds easily. Collect and save seed over winter. Then next spring scatter right after water goes down. Just pick things that flower in first year after sowing and can handle dry in summer. Might work anyway best of luck to you.

This is equipment that belong to our subdevision that we use for clean-up ( fall/storms/etc/firedepartment). This chipper gets a work-out from chipping very hard bark. 12 bags from Lowe's makes about 11/2 wheelbarrel full of very nice finds and you have a container leftover of too bigge pieces that could be regrind again.The fines are blown in back of a pick-up truck.

The concept of frost seeding is to get the seed down so early that if/when you get a few warm days with moisture, the grass seed will sprout before most of the summer annual weeds. It's too late for that. That's why January. Some of the summer annual plants germinate in August and lie nearly dormant until the longer days of spring bring them out of dormancy. Many wildflowers fit in that category. If you don't like them, then they are called weeds. Thistle is another.

Yeah Chas, it's been a long cold winter here too, even though where I am is almost the sub-tropics. Cold westerly blowing all day today, and dry, gees, I haven't seen rain since I dunno how long; dry's a dead dingo's you know what! On and acre and a half, with new plants scattered here and there, bucketing water and hanging on to the end of the hose bites into your gardening time.
Today I planted out a punnet of Imperial lettuce and dug up half the crop of spuds I planted 3 to 4 months ago. Nice crop of 'Dutch Cream' variety, will dig up the rest as we need 'em.
