pruning the shady side?

Just pondering this one. Two syzygiums which screen the neighbours clothes line are lined up east-west.....I am contemplating pruning the northern (sunny) side now and waiting until the sun moves south to do the other side to minimise any lanky shoots.

What do you think?

Rose, I don't see why not. Though I think there is enough "general" sunshine filtering through for it to possibly not make too much difference to do the whole tree now, unless they are particularly dense and in effect, self-shading.

Thanks Alison, actually they are pretty dense so may well wait for the sun (earth!) to start swinging back. That happens so quickly when it starts!

I was thinking too about gardens with neat hedges and how much of an issue looking after a shaded side is there. These syzygiums have suddenly turned into small trees when I wasn't looking, isn't it great that gardening isn't static? The tops have shot madly since the last trim from the (elevated)neighbour's side and almost appear to be reaching for the sun, and there's a good 1.5 m trunk on each. Begging for understory in short. Oh, and there are a couple of randias in there too, some serious overplanting took place :)

You are right, the pictures were bad. I took some new ones and it has taken me hours to transfer them from my phone to my computer and then to this site. Hope these are better. As I mentioned, the Catalpa tree is not yet in bloom. I was trying to figure out how to lay out the walkway and beds, hence the hose in the pictures. I can't figure out how to lay out the beds and walk/ walkways so that they look "right" and hide the shabby area behind the tree. If the tree was not smack dab in the middle of the yard, I would put in a central patio area. But it would be odd to have a patio behind a tree, and not very useful either. But the area behind the tree is what we view from our window every day. Any help in designing the space so that we have beds that cover the shabby area and yet create an overall look that does not look awkward would be appreciated. The pictures are taken facing south, from the back of the house looking toward the front. The side yard is on the west side of our home. The driveway is behind the house.

Impatien seed should not be covered when planted. Just lightly press them into the soil & keep them moist. That said, I don't know how they would do in pine fines. I always start them in pots & transplant were I want them.

pshaw .... as to any given micro climate.. which would include sun ... all you can do.. IS GO FOR IT ... you either fail or or you win ... all opinions is good info ... but when it all boils down ... GO FOR IT ... light intensity is relative ... the front of my house faces due north ... i can grow all full sun plants out there.. because its so bright .... as well as all shade plant .. go figure ... besides.. they are in pots.. if they fail.. just move the pots out back .. lol ... ken
