Growers in the Cairns area

Does anyone know of any growers in the Cairns and surrounding area who wouldn't mind visitors to their gardens? We are interested in orchids, bromeliads, tillandsias, aroids and unusual plants. I am aware and have been to most of the nurseries there. A visit to some backyard growers would be great.......plus they are normally cheaper to buy from as well.

I agree. I'm in southern Johnson county and things look great. I have five of my 36 plants with some kind of persistent leaf curl issue, but even those are setting at an alarming rate. I say alarming bc my family has warned me not to grow so many that we fill the counters with tomatoes.

Don't know what you mean by big but it will likely b the red. You're encountering. Why? They are the ones that grow fastest and do best here. They will also b costly if "big". No bargains to be found now as we're nearing flowering season. Kinda like not being able to find a deal on Xmas tree before Xmas. If lucky you might find a deal on a large red after holidays. Only other option is small plant via mail order and it would b recommended for an experienced camellia grower.

One time I put an ad for rabbits on Craigslist because we had an unexpected litter. This guy showed up w his wife and daughter and picked up a few baby bunnies. He turned out to be a total perv. He kept calling and texting for like 3mos afterwards and wanting to come over. I didnt answer after the first time he called inappropriately but that didnt stop him from leaving messages and texting. I am never using CL again after that. I had to change my # and I hate that he knows where I live. I cant blame anyone for taking precautions nowdays. You never know.

Chinotto as rootstock for container growers outside citrus areas?

The seville sour orange is the most versatile rootstock and it produces the best tasting fruit until it is wiped out by tristeza. The Smooth flat seville resist Tristeza but produce inferior fruit. Might as well use the superior Poncirus trifoliata. Chinotto May produce superior fruit like Seville or may do no better than lemon rootstock. I cannot find info on fruit quality/Chinotto rootstock. Unfortunately being a sour orange offers no promise of good fruit. I wish you well on this one. Steve

The garden is on five acres, some orchids, many bromeliads, tillandsias, numerous aroids and many unusual plants. Numerous palms and one of the best flowering tree collections you will ever see.

Make sure you call John and arrange a visit.
