commercial heliconia varieties

which of the heliconias(excluding those needing shade) are best for cut-flower purposes as far as inflorecenses per year and marketability are concerned??

Craig, A simple answer would be Sexy Pinks and Orthotricas. However,when considering which tropicals to put in for cut flower production you are better off starting with a little bit of everything and seeing which grows for you in your climate, soil, etc. You should also consider your method of freight (flower weight can be a big issue when things go by air)Season it flowers, are you exporting, 'fashion trends' Darwin growers tell me 'pinks are in' and don't forget beehives and torches. There are other South African growers, it may be a good idea to have a chat with them. People can be a bit strange in niche market horticulture, so the wheel has to be reinvented over and over. I prefer to think if we all work together we can improve quality and productivity which in turn will increase the tropical share of the cut flower industry. Good Luck!! Thanks for the answers guys. The biggest problem I keep running into is that the online places seen to already be sold out of the varieties I want and if they do have them, they are on Mazzard, which as fruitnut mentioned produces a massive tree. I figured that since most of the online place would not have what I want this year, it couldn't hurt to call my local Southern States Coop to see what they will be bringing in in the spring. At least for this year, I'm looking at buying a Black Gold and a Black York. I know the Black Gold is a tried and true variety on the East Coast being both crack resistant and showing resistance to canker. I couldn't find much on the Black York(also known as Easter Bing according to the lady at the Southern States garden center. Cummins describes Black York as being both crack and canker resistant, but he is sold out for the year and I couldn't find anymore info. Does anyone have any experience with Black York (flavor, cracking, canker, etc)? I'm hoping the trees will be on some sort of semidwarfing rootstock as Southern States usually gets their potted fruit trees from Stark Bros. Interesting point: Stark Bros does not list Black York on their commercial catalog for 2013.

This is a good question that I'm sure Lisa Vinzant could answer. She usually post at the Bromeliad forum. It would be awesome if she could also be a regular here in this forum, too. I saw her at Oahu Urban Garden Center in February, selling her plants, which includes Heliconias--don't know the types though, I was more interested in her bromeliads.
