I never heard of 'camphor laurel' so I Googled it. I imagine I'll dream about it tonight. It sounds like a horrible curse. If I had a 'huge pile' of wood and leaf mulch from this critter, I'd probably either burn it (I doubt if you can do this with your drought and fire issues) or thoroughly compost it. Is it feasible to bag it up and let it compost in heavy poly bags? That's what I do with noxious stuff like English Ivy, Pachysandra and Poison Ivy. A bit of moisture in the black bags, and a year or two in the sun, and all that's left is harmless mush.

Some asked about the size of the pieces of wood chips. Below is a picture of my new raised bed after I filled it up with chips. The second is a close-up after it rained this afternoon, and the bed settled down some. The close-up shows that the chips are mostly slightly bigger or slightly smaller than a quarter. The are about the same thickness as a quarter as well. Some of it has bamboo stems that are about half the diameter of a pencil and 12 to 24 inches longs. There aren't too many of these, which are sort of like stiff wheat straw. In each wheelbarrow full, I would normally find a piece the size of my hand that was about 1/4 inch thick. I would not have wanted an entire load of these big bits, but a few mixed in weren't a problem for me for the price. If it's Free, I can pick out some bits I don't like. I live on a fixed income, so the price is perhaps more important to me that it might be to other. If you had a chopper that would shred the stuff into smaller bits, it would really be grand. Well now that it's settled down a bit, I'm going to put a single layer of newspaper, a few inches of finished leaf/grass compost, and transplant my strawberries from containers. Since I'm using the chips as a filler in the bed below my plants, I'm going to start fertilizing them with dilute water soluble fertilizer once per week. The nutrients that wash down through the top layer should be absorbed by the chips and help their decomposition proceed. I've got almost 2 months until first frost, then I'll cover the strawberries with some pine straw until spring, when I will resume fertilizing again. I've also used the chips to mulch around my fruit trees, blackberries, and muscadines that I'm growing in containers. It's worked great for that as well. I've got few dog paths in the backyard where my dogs aways run along the same route and keep the grass killed down. I've spread some the wood chips along their paths as well. They were a big bulky and hard to walk on at first. I watered these paths and then tamped then down by rolling a 5 gallon bucket full or dirt back and forth along the path twice. After that they were fine for walking on without tripping on bits sticking up. Other people might not have had good experience with the chips from tree services, but I'm happy with mine. My only real problem has been that their truck was so big they could not drive up my driveway because of power lines. They had to dump the pile of wood chips in my front yard next to the street, and I've had to cart it all to my backyard where I garden. At first I used a wheelbarrow, but it didn't hold very much. Thanks for the great link! All of the beautiful red bay trees in the woods behind our house died in the summer and my avocado sapling just recently bit the dust. However, they are still sprouting healthy growth from the roots. Hopefully my avocado will do the same! :( Just driving through any woods in the area yields views of rusty trees. This is just as devastating as dutch elm disease, but red bays are underutilized in the landscape here so most people don't notice.

What can I plant that is deer resistant? This list of deer resistant plants was compiled from Gardenweb postings and other sources. As you can see from the follow-up postings at the bottom of the list, RESISTANT is the key word. Deer can be quite the gourmets and yours may still be partial to some of the plants on this list. Deer that are hungry enough will eat everything bare from the ground up into the trees as high as they can reach. Many of the plants on this list are poisonous or medicinal. If a plant smells bad to you when you crush the leaf or stem, it probably smells just as bad to the deer. (P.S. I was all ready to quibble and say that I thought Four-O'clocks were Mirabilis, not Clarkia, when I saw you'd got Mirabilis listed as Four-oclocks under annuals. The joy of common names! Have you ever grown clarkia? I understand they do OK here and are really attractive in part-shade. They also devoured a barberry, and hostas are out of the question. One day last winter we looked out our window and saw a doe eating birdseed out of one of our bird feeders! What's tasty is apparently a regional issue, also, so you might try checking your local (in my case, Maryland Cooperative Extension's Web site) extension service for a list of plants that are "deer candy" or avoided by deer in your area. I've had them nibble on Japanese white spiraea (Spiraea albiflora) and the usual tulip and hosta foliage. They prefer my neighbors grass. She has it professionally taken care of every week. I wish she would stop. Our yards are attached and they wander up this way frequently. Moved from California to Virginia last year, so much to learn! Deer are different in different areas. For example mule deer in CA usually won't touch impatiens, but white tail in VA LOVE it. I spent a lot of money to fence in my back yard. The only sure way. (I hope) Also, they won't eat my iris, but they eat certain daylilies, but not others.
