I have used wire baskets placed over the plant and weighted down with rocks to reduce the damage, but if they like the taste they will come back each autumn and nip the plant off until it is too high for them. You could try camphor (moth balls) around the plants but be aware that they are poisonous to kids and pets. They do deter possums usually. I had terrible trouble with golden pendas which seemed to be their favourite snack.

i'm not into growing anything much than herbs and vegetables so can't suggest for cottage type garden plants.

i grow the things they like to eat behind netting fences and the things they don't like i grow out in the open works well for me. the things they like beans & cabbages etc.,. is wherever i plant these type of things i have a fence there or i erect a temp fence. things they don't eat tomato plants, capsicums, pumpkins etc.,. potatoes and the onion family.

Hello Sunshine, We don't have too much trouble with Hares here though we do see them about it is the Rabbits that caused me most grief.
They just loved the day lillies so we made each plant it's own little fence with strong chicken wire and that kept the little monsters away till they got a taste for other plants so we ended up going right round the Ringlock fence with Chicken wire and that has kept them out, plus a little Black dog called Reggie who doesn't like them much either.

A bar-b-que with Hare-burgers or Shish-ka-rabobbits would do the trick. But in case your wondering they LOVE poincettias also. I saved one, with a cheap plastic bit of Bunnings fencing. Good Luck.

plastic tree guards and stakes to keep them away from the trunk or basically anything to stop them ringbarking the plant. Here one cute one become a lovely twosome then four then 6 - now frozen :o(
