The old Camellia is loving the Winter..while the Rosemary is attracting lots of bees. Where do they come from in the middle of winter?

Wonderful to see the Camellia in bloom Chas..
Good to see that you have bees around your garden in the winter as I could never find any in my Qld garden till the weather warmed up more.

Chas - Your post interested me because I've thought about beekeeping in the past year. I didn't follow up on it, but your post inspired me to do a bit of research. Check out the link below.

Apparently worker bees live about 1-4 months and queen bees live 2-5 years. I imagine queen bees are dormant in winter months in colder climates. The climate is mild enough in Australia for them to be active all year round. I've seen lots of bees around my Kay Williams grevillea.

Your rosemary bush looks fabulous. I didn't like the shape of mine (big and scraggly) and gave it a hard prune about a month ago. That probably affected the flowering...

You would be wise to have a certified arborist out to look at the site and suggest a "best" method. Cutting the roots that close to an your oak will seriously damage it, mostly likely kill it. But it may be possible to tunnel under the roots rather than cut through them. It may be a bit pricey -- you need to weigh that cost that against the cost of losing/removing an established tree.

Thank you for the kind thoughts-Christmas was bittersweet at times, and there were some group tears moments-but over all it was fun-DD and DS-in-L were in from the West Coast and we enjoyed our half of their visit. After an autumn of comfort rereading, I am moving on-first I read Sister Queens by Julia Fox-a tandem biography of Catherine of Aragon (1st wife of Henry VIII) and Juana of Castile, queen of Aragon and Castile in her own right and mother of a Holy Roman Emperor. Interesting parallels even though they met only once after Catherine left for England at age 16. Now I am treating myself with Miss Buncle's Book by D.E. Stevenson. Charming, light, a bonbon. Work has started up again-deadline on the 3rd-so reading time will become slim and precious. For BookClub in January we will be reading Killing Lincoln

While all of the advice should be followed, one place to start is to read the documentation you received when you bought the house. In my experience most home mortgages require a building inspection before they will accept the mortgage. In that report they sometime note problems and express opinions on possible solutions to problems on the property. Another report you received during closing if you have a septic system with leach bed is a report on the inspection of that system it too may have information that will helpful. By chance is the excess water you are seeing over the Leach bed? I hope not as that could be an indication of big costly problems. Some times the survey of the lot, which is usually required as part of closing, some times notes any easements that are on the property. Sometime these easements include wetland comments. Lastly if you are talking to your neighbors, they may be able to tell you what has been done with your lot and the conditions that may be present. One question for them is that status of their yard.

Lovely to see the camellias out, mine are rotting on the bud, never happened before, Just hoping Brushfield's Yellow will fare better.
