Thanks Lozza - consider one sold - I didn't have a clue whether I would be able to find a suitable rose for those positions or not. I would love to try one at least.

Need some more suggestions though. I want to mass plant something along a fenceline - will PT give good coverage without being too rampant and heavy - how much support would it need and how close should I plant to get the coverage? Would I be better off planting it on the embankment with some other ramblers.

I understand P T has wiry, vigorous growth. Is it thorny though because I am not up for pruning thorny canes. I have rejected the idea of bougainvilleas for the same reason.

Appreciate the help. My order for PT and some others will be in next month I hope.

Try 'Renae' for no thorns. Not as vigorous as PT, which has lots of small prickles. 'Renae' at about 10' centres.

Yes I am familiar with Renae but hadn't got round to considering it for the embankment - thanks for the suggestion - don't quite see it on my bush fence - perhaps an Alister Clark? Might scrap the idea of a rose there.

It isn't that I want no thorns as most roses have them - just that I am wary of how thorny some get in a sub-tropical climate. I haven't the first clue about the ramblers. I have fallen for Paul though.

What if I planted Renae so she sprawled up the embankment, might need 2 or 3 and interplant with Marie Pavie, Margaret Merril, White Meidland...and others?

I am not a fan of the carpet roses although Appleblossom is quite pretty.

It gets plenty hot here in the summer, over 100 degrees f. is not uncommon, and rugosas seem to like it just fine. I'm pretty miserly with the water too. Only one of my rugosas is a poor performer, Mme Georges Bruant, and not surprisingly she has a tea parent, the real Mlle de Sombreuil (Mme Georges Bruant was produced in 1887 before Mlle de Sombreuil became confused in commerce). She takes after the tea part of her heritage in wanting lots of water and badly mildewing. So I think it depends on the rugosa. Those that are mostly rugosa, or that favor their rugosa genes, like leaner, sandier soils and are pretty drought tolerant. The ones that are crosses with less drought tolerant roses may perform more like the other rose(s) in the cross even if they have the outward appearance of a rugosa. Melissa

I've discovered the hard way that most of the Barbiers are really for the warmest part of Z7 & up into Z8-10. I once fell madly for their fragrance & wonderful pastel colors & added many to my rambler collection. "Surely they will be winter-hardy in coastal New England (7a)," said I. Well... they were, for a few years, until that occasional harder-than-usual winter hit. All I have left now are 'Alexandre Girault' & a struggling 'Alberic Barbier', both of which have been disappointing for their lack of strong fragrance. So it looks like all Barbiers were not created equal, so to speak. Sorry to seem overly negative, but that's been my experience with them.

Virginia, I saw that image too. It is possible it is was the right plant. But being a mostly once bloomer I thought it was odd that 3weeks after arriving with no leaves it would leaf out and put out a bloom. I am hoping all of my thorn wall will do some rebloom since the weather is nice here, but not really expecting anything for a while
