Hiya - has anyone had any experience with growing this tree is Australia?

If so wondering what conditions/climate it responds to and also seeking a source of plants, seeds or cuttings.

I have the other 'tree gardenia' (G. thunbergia), which I grew from seed bought on ebay (still a long way off their first flowering). I would think the Rothmannia would require pretty much the same conditions as a gardenia, but here are some official cultivation notes from one of my refs:

Grow these frost-tender plants in a sheltered, sunny or semi-shaded spot. A well-drained soil enriched with organic matter is ideal, preferably with a neutral to slightly acid pH. Propagate from seed in spring or from cuttings in summer. Zones 10-11.

hello, I have two growing west of Brisbane. One is covered in flowers and the other has very few so far. They are less than a metre apart and are approximately 2m highbut very narrow. They are growing in very clayey soil with only a superficial layer of topsoil over. They face West and have not had any water except from the sky for the last6 years, were only watered to establish. They should do very well with better conditions as they have been very tough here just to survive in the soil which is not good. They do not have any seed at the moment but did set some last year - if they have any this year it will not be ready for some considerable time but if you wish to send me an email with your address I will send some if and when it is ready. I would think the only possible problem could be with too much water during the wet so place on a slight mound if soil does not have a slope. Robyn

Thanks for the links and sources everyone. Sharil, I've got Gracilis on my list. I may get it this spring. For a long time I stayed away from the crypts that get 30/50 ft and the ones that stay so small. I'm still not crazy about the ones that stay tiny, but I think I can find a place for a couple of the taller ones. Karen, I finally found a picture of 'Spiraliter Falcata' .. I love the look of it, but with it being so thin does it have any problems with winter burn? Not a problem if it does, would just have to site it right. I read that it only grows abt 2 inches a year. Do you know how tall it will get? I also love the Majiro, but can't find it anywhere! I've been told that some of the crypts need protection from winter winds. Anyone seeing any problems with that? Brenda, I don't know anything about Ben Franklin, but Yoshino is a very fast grower. It gets 30 to 50 feet. Araucarioides will get about 15 feet (8 ft wide). Not as fast as Yoshino, but it's creeping along pretty well. I think it about doubled in size in three years. They have a mature one on the grounds at PDN, ask someone to point it out to you if you get the chance. It was my first Crypt and I love it. Here is a link that might be useful: Crypt pics

Rothmannia capensis is new to me, but one local horticulture society member showed a flowering branch of Rothmannia globosa last year. I remembered that the flowers were about 1" long, bell-shaped, and had a clean fragrance. The Holarrhena is also new to me. It is funny that I also bought a few plants from Logees but I did not see these plants listed under either Fragrant or New for 2011 categories. What I got is a Talauma candollei, a Randia ruziana, and a Citharexylum spinosum. They are all quite healthy and really need to be liberated from their tiny 2" containers. Thanks.

If you both run out of patient, you always have option of pack it and send it my way. I am proofed of having enough patient... 6+ years for that sucker to bloom...LOL. Kemistry, I have never heard of Rothmannia Capensis, but just googled. It supposely have gradenia scent... Yours looks having been grown very well. Hope it bloom soon so we all can learn its scent and start our next " movement"... Robert, Your Plumeria collection is up to 12 now? It sure is a well developed plant. Will it bloom soon or you have to wait till next year? $5 can buy this size Oncidium, great buy! You are much bigger bargan hunter than I am. I usually pay $3 at Lowe to buy 90% dead orchids. Nothing is as big as yours. Looking at these long flower spikes, you will get a ton of flowers when it blooms. I am curious about scent of this " Sweet Baby" and am wondering if this one smell like " Sharry baby". My this week's sin is goose berry bush and honey berry bush. That seven son isn't on sale yet... still waiting.

Hi Robyn,
Just commenting on an old post here...

I've a Rothmannia which is struggling with some kind of canker, and never really produced much for flowers -- considering removing it.
How are your trees going now? I also am keen about propagating and I understand the ideal time for taking Rothmannia cuttings is now. Would you be interested in sharing a few slips of the floriferous tree? Perhaps I have something of interest to you?

Hi Paul, I just noticed your comments from 2016 regarding a Rothmania, were you succesful in obtaining any cuttings? My plant is out at the moment in all its glory, it does not receive much water at all in the hot W.A. Perth summer, it is in a very hot position facing west, so I can vouch that they are pretty tough, so if you still require cuttings or seed (I did raise mine from seed, but very slow), please feel free to ask.

They took a while to get established but once they found their feet boom blooms galore

tree gardenias continue to remove the seed pods which intern force the plant into 🌸

plenty of good organic fertiliser.
