Alocasia - leaves yellowing and dying

Greetings

This is my first log in altho I have browsed the site for a number of years.

I am trying to grow alocasias in my garden. The soil is compacted clay altho I frequently use 'claybreaker' and I also much. One clump is in dappled shade, the other gets full sun in the afternoon. Both show this yellowing of the leaves. Any advice?

I asked a friend who knows a bit about aroids but also used to live in Darwin and she said >>>>

re alocasias...There are a couple of diseases...phytophra
is one and the "taro beatle' but I think her problem is simple..
Crap dirt, not well drained, and of course winter,even in Darwin
they do die off a bit...5 in 1 fertilser...a good soaking once a
week...and good mulch but kept well away from the emerging shoots.
She can cut back...when they get straggly...They love water, but
unless they are Taro,they don't like being water logged...If I was
her...I would get a trailer load of good dirt from somewhere..dig up
the alocasia and dump the soil in the hole and then replant. before
the spring rains come..5 in 1 bag of fertilser..and watch it go.

That photo doesn't look like normal nitrogen deficiency to me. I think it may be a potassium or micro-nutrient deficiency. I'm just guessing without knowing more about what they're growing in. The beans sound to me like aphids and spider mites. check the underside of the spotted leaves for small red arachnids. My bitter melons took a long time to do much of anything but the weather warmed up for the past couple of months and I have fruit bursting all over now.

Alocasias aren't like most houseplants, they love heat and they love humidity. Mine have gone dormant, but last summer, they were growing leaves like crazy. It gets very hot and very humid here where I live in the South. As long as I kept their soil well watered and didn't let them dry out, they absolutely loved it. This year, I plan on repotting them all together into one larger pot and place them in my greenhouse which I just bought an electric heater for. It keeps it warm and toasty in there, as well as very humid. My other plants love it, so I know my Alocasias will too.

Looks like older leaves dying off. No biggie. However, these plants don't typically carry a lot of leaves per stem to begin with ... particularly when grown indoors. They like it hot and bright. Avoid direct, hot afternoon sun.

Sorry for quick double-post.... To answer Hu's question about spraying: you are in a tricky spot because of the weather. As Silica said, you don't want to spray your leaves when it is hot (>75-80 degrees) because that can cook your leaves. My Meyer has been growing like crazy for the last 1-2 months but in Phoenix it is still 100 degrees. So, much of my new growth is deformed. I try and spray with water to knock the thrips loose periodically, but can't seem to keep up with it. In other words, you have few options during summer/fall flushes when you live in warmer climates like we do. I'm not aware of anything else you can do besides a rigorous spraying with water, multiple times a week as long as you are getting new growth.
