I love my hope chest and I'm only 18! When I started mine it was because we were cleaning out my grandma's attic and there were quite a few sets of dishes as she didn't have much when she was a girl (she lived on a farm) so she always kept any dishes that came her way in case someone needed something. But I found a set of 3 pretty blue dishes that you can still get replacements for online (yay! I want at least 4), but my mom suggested that I keep them in the toy box my dad made for me when I was a little girl (5 I think?) but I've put in things I've done, a quilt, some embroidered pillowcases and a family tree that's almost finished. But I was also given 2 quilts, one from my great grandma who gave it to my aunt, and one that my grandma made as a girl. They're both so pretty that I don't know if I want to use them. Maybe they'll go on a guest bed so they won't be ruined. But as for china, I received a set from my grandma, as did my brother who didn't care which of the 2 sets he got, actually he was all for me getting both sets, but my insisted. I believe he got her wedding china and I got her mother's set, but it could be the other way around. Either way I'm looking forward to using all these things one day in my own house. The chest will definitely be going with me when I move out! Now just to tell my family that I have one so they can add things if they want! Especially my two aunts who had only boys because they like doing girly things with me! Good luck to any who are making one, especially Jennifer! I hope you're having fun storing things in yours! I know mine provides me hope for the future when everything else seems so confusing!

I'm afraid your sales weasel or installer is an ignoramus. The manuals STILL state hookup to hot OR cold water and if you have the china setting AND your hot water heater is set to deliver 120 deg. + water - you are going to cook most fine china. The cold water hookup is to ensure the incoming water is not TOO HOT for china and crystal. These machines will heat their own water. They WILL NOT chill incoming water that is too hot for a given program. Cat - , I'm curious what your weasel told you has changed about the new generation that now allows hot water to be used with the China setting. Like EXACTLY what the unit does to cool the water to safe china temps - not some horse pucky weasel speak.

I haven't seen "What Lies Beneath" and found Jack Nicholson's character in "Something's Gotta Give" too distractingly irritating to really notice the decor (maybe I need to watch it again with the sound off! LOL), so I can't really help you with specifics there. :-) Since you've got a simple ranch, I would keep the doors very simple too. I can easily see a Shakerish two-panel or even a single panel to echo your cabinetry, unless you're going very fussy with your new moldings which I think would be incompatible with your architecture. Because they're all on a different floor mixing in the six-panel style isn't as big a deal, although that's one of the very few things I do have a bit of a fetish for consistency about... PO put an addition on our house and used six-panel doors when the rest of the house has four-panel, and I think they just scream "addition". (Thankfully there are some of the old four-panel doors in the shed so we can swap them out eventually. Why he didn't use those instead of buying new doors is beyond me, considering how cheap he was on everything else!) I did go dig up some pictures of the SGG set and noticed a lot of use of French doors - would you consider using French doors (singles) on rooms that don't require privacy? Oh, and if you know the name of that discontinued SW paint, they'll almost certainly have the formula for it in their computer. Just for giggles, I'm daydreaming about a (partially) white and (faux) soapstone kitchen too, although it's much warmer... I've linked to pictures that have been serving as inspiration for said daydreams below. I don't know whose kitchen it is, it's probably from a magazine, but someone gave them to me a couple of years ago. Unless we win the lottery, mine'll be Ikea and Formica instead of custom and soapstone, but I think it'll still get the point across. BTW, you don't need a special tool to open the privacy knob sets that have a hole in the knob. We've always just used a nail or a bobby pin... in fact, in the houses where I babysat, the parents usually kept a nail on the top of the door casing because their mischievous little monstersoffspring ;-) would lock themselves into various rooms!
