Mystery damage

I thought I had the snow pea damage under control. This am

I have this pile of twigs . All the leaves have been eaten.

the lettuce which we are now eating is untouched.No signs of snail or slug trails. Has anyone seen damage like this before? any clues or advice thankfully received.

Well, Chas, the leaf looks like a caterpillar of some sort, but as for the bits of stick underneath, well, reminds me of what white cockatoos do to my African Tulip tree and other things around the place; they take a few bites and then just drop the rest and start on a new one - seed pod usually of the African Tulip tree. Bird damage? When do you find it Chas, early in the morning? what birds are about? any caterpillars? Looks like something is chewing the stems in half and then just dropping the bits to rot! Ummmm, suspect it's a nocturnal something or other. Dunno what else, what about going out at night with a torch, surprising what you can find in your garden at night mate!

Thanks for the replies....it makes me a feel a little better....unfortunately I have to look at these ugly things all summer....right next to my walkway! Will the wrinkled look go away? none of my other plants appear this way it's possible there was a frost...i dont know if hers were up or not because they werent at my home! Not sure what the worm looks like you mentioned, but i did find a 1 cm long black with silver striped wormy looking thing on top of the soil during a slug hunt last night. i also found many ants on one leaf...

i usually have leader damage on my picea pungens.. blue spruce.. due to the robins INSISTING on perching on the highest tip of the plant ... the grackles also ... and it is slightly entertaining to see them do it in a wind storm.. ken

I've just got to get some photos of this damage for you to see. The worst of the damage seems to be winding down rapidly. Your description is quite similar to the damage on my roses. Buds are either "drilled" out in the very center, or eaten out more extensively. The stamen area is completely destroyed. The discoloration ranges from blackish brown to light brown. Even the edges of the outer bud petals are affected with brown discoloration. The severely affected can still try to open and the bud is mostly destroyed on those. Less severely affected will open, but the center is missing. I have several Evelyn roses which have been affected for years. Others which are susceptible are Colette (severe), Caramel Antique, The Prince, Augusta Luise (severe), and Love Song. These are all many petaled roses with an antique look. The puzzling thing is that these roses grow right next to other roses that aren't damaged at all. I also have thrips damage on some roses that aren't "drilled", just have the brown edges on some petals. None of these look as bad as the above photos show.
