Alison, the English brought them here along with the rabbits and sparrows.
They do eat slugs and snail, also love cat/dog food it came back this morning and had another plate of food and cat biscuits. I hope it hangs around and I won't use the bad slug bait.

I grew up in New Zealand and remember Hedghogs with great affection. They are one of the few introduced mammals that have caused no great problems for the environment.

I think the little guy has done extremely well not to end up as 'catfood' himself ! As it's an introduced species (from your post - I wouldnt know it from a chipmunk), I couldnt shed too many tears, but it would be fantastic if everything in the bush was the size of an adult possum with claws and attitude to match ...

Hi Heather, Nice photo. I've never heard of them in NZ before either. It least they haven't become the problem of the good old Aussie possum. I was in transit in Auckland airport a few weeks back and was amused by the creative use of possum skins & fur. Someone has worked out how to combine it with lambswool and turned it into o-so-soft jumpers etc and the skins have been made into everything imaginable.
