Elina and Just Joey as standards

Hi,

1/ do you think Elina and Just Joey would be too vigorous to grow as standards?

2/ Are any rose nurseries producing them?

3/ Is it too late for bare-root orders?

Hi

I have a standard Just Joey I bought at Dandenong Market because it looked really good. It's been terrific (only planted in Feb this year). It's double grafted and has about 9 blooms at a time. In the dreadful windy weather we've had I've needed to put in an extra stake, but it's looking as though it might get another round of blooms in.

Treloars have them as standards, but frankly theirs don't look as good as mine.

I hope it's not too late to order, a series of domestic disasters has put my rose list on hold.

They would be quite vigorous Barbara, but that's not a bad thing. Growing a standard means shaping the bush, whatever kind you grow. If it's vigorous you cut back a little more stringently - no big deal.

Roses with small prolific flowers make the best standards, including the so-called weeping roses. Suggestions are Renae, Gourmet Popcorn, any of the Fairy roses, and most polyanthas. I have Gourmet Popcorn as a standard and it's wonderful. Of the large roses, the only ones I have personally seen make great standards are Playboy, Playgirl and Fame!. The rest of the large rose standards I have seen just kind of look like off balance bushes standing on tippy toes. I'm not a fan of those. I also tend to think that the longer the standard, the better looking the plant -- I've seen some Renae standards that are 80 inches at Armstrongs locally, which makes a great weeper. Kathy

Ohhhhhhhhhhh . . . . there she is (meaning ROYAL HIGHNESS) in all her EXQUISITE beauty!! :) My favorite rose to put in a vase. Along with her delectable fragrance she's one of the reasons I say, "MAKE MINE A HYBRID TEA." Here in my semi-arid climate she's easy as pie to grow organically. Smooooooooookin' Hot!! My JJ blooms as often as most of my HT's. , but it is a gangly branched thing. Here it is ( about 6-7 years old) with lots of buds that will be lovely....just too late for the party that I cut it back for. Ah well. Cut back several in Oct., just a little too late. He did not bloom as well this year in our hideous heat. Can only think I didn't hand water enough, and the sun was too hot at times. I'm in so. Ca. coastal/ 6 hours sun. I adore the sweet scented , big apricot blooms. Poor pic trying to get all the many little buds in the pic. I'm betting these blooms will not be so large. Is it the cold nights? I see this often in my autumn blooms. Still, my neighbor's bed faces west, and hers are summer- lovely. My sun is eastern. Well, that's another topic. JJ is worth your patience, imo. Good luck!

Iceberg is a great rose, and for a good reason. But being more immune to our scorching summers has nothing to do with some special charm or a spell casted upon the name Iceberg. Like any other iceberg, this rose will also be damaged in the warm sun, but to the far less extent than some fully double, crimson rose. It's simple physics -- white petals reflect more light, thus remaining much cooler. And semidouble, loose flower type allows for more air circulation between the petals, thus producing even better cooling effect. Iceberg's leaves are tiny, and also allow for more air circulation. Plus, flower size is not big, just small enough not to accumulate too much heat. That's why this is an ideal rose for planting in public places, where there's no or very little protection and care. Observe this with any other single and semidouble rose of paler hues -- they whitstand heat much, much better. You'll notice only slight shift in hue in coloured roses as they open, as days become warmer and the sun hotter. But because it's already white, Iceberg will look unaffected, although, in reality, it suffers too, but to the much less extent. Double and fully double roses don't like hot weather of Australia and if we're smart, we'll plant them in shade, in the back, under some protection, and water them well to preserve their shape and their perfume longer. And if we carefully observe how sun moves and casts the shadow around our home during the summer, the better we will be in designing gardens and planting roses. There's nothing worse than plant delicate pinks, yellows and crimsons in the front of our gardens, where their only protection is a lonely cloud, that comes once in a while.

Both would be fine as standards aslong as you keep them trimmed .
Lando plants i am sure had them both and they were only 20 bucks so why bother with a bare rooted rose,which would be a year younger just to save a few bucks

Now where is Lando Plants so we can all have a look at their stock,
Barbara I have Elina as a bush rose but I think if you keep it trimmed it would look magnificent in a standard

there at 49 clifton grove Carrum Downs ph 9782 0905 its a bit tricky to find if you look in the melways there on the corner of boundary rd i was truly amazed at the amout of stock they had and the prices were cheap cheap cheap

I bought Elina and Just Joey as bush roses and I've taken cutting after cutting from Elina for cutting roses for the house. I want these as standards for my daughter-in-law's front garden. I'll have a look at Lando Plants - we're not too far away.

I have Elina as a bush and a standard. My bush is around 6' tall and the standard is about 4' from the graft. Both are vigorous and you get a lovely crop of flowers.
I only have just joey as a bush but have seen standards, it wouldn't be as vigorous as the Elina.
Treloars have them both as standards.

It was there when they bought the house, so I don't know.
But it is sensational.
I am checking with Roseworld at Moyhu to see if Clive has any as his stuff is SO cheap and VERY good....
