hey guys. Well even after getting it under a little shade cloth it has still gone pretty much brown. even blade is about half to 3/4's brown, ill try post a photo tomorrow but yeah its not looking too good at the moment. The new growth in the middle hasnt changed since last update, Not sure if it will bounce back or not but fingers crossed

that is a typical situation for Archontophoenix... if grown in a humid climate, particularly if grown in partial or full shade, they get stretched out like that... then when they suddenly end up here in California, they go into shock... see this at Home Depot all the time for Archontophoenix grown back east. Often their decline is irreversible, but most of the time you can just keep them in a shaded area for a few years and then slowly move them into more sunlight. I personally only get Archontophoenix grown locally and then avoid this problem altogether.

I have a couple of 2 foot x-mas palm seedlings as well. I saw one in a greenhouse that looks as though it won't outgrow my ceiling!! I like the idea of soapwater. I spray my palms regularly but don't use soapwater. Thanks for the tip xerophyte. dave in nova-I am more interested in the palms that are rarely seen in Canada. Walmart has the majesty palm and kentia and lady palms are found in every nursery. The triangle and alexander palm i have to special order. What about growing a sabal palmetto indoors? I read that they are VERY slow growing and I have not read anywhere that they would survive indoors due to lighting conditions. If you keep the tree potted wont it keep it small enough to keep indoors?

hello everyone, I am late to join this forum but we are currently in the process of establishing a palm garden is Mandurah, WA. There have not been many contibutors in the forum from over this way, so hopefully this might encourage more western gardeners to join in. Initially I was worried about planting tropical palms this far south but after seeing some of the wonderful specimins growing very well in and around Mandurah I eventually persueded the family to let me have a plam garden. We have begun to plant a variety of palms in the front garden, most of which I have seen growing very well in my local area. I have planted (common names)Bangalows, Triangles, Spindles, Golden Canes, a jelly palm, Majestics, a European Fan, a Bismark and a bunch of different cycads but I also have a heap more in pots ready to plant out including Hawaiian fans, Alexanders and Kentias . I would like to obtain a few more tropical palms like "teddybears" and other varieties of Dypsis as well as some various charmadoreas to underplant with once the more sun hardy varieties get larger. Well I hope this might encourage some more West Australian gardeners to join in and contribute some of their knowledge about growing palms over this side of the country. Adam Harbeck
