I have a sugarcane growing in my backyard. The stalk is from a friend who digged it for me in Louisanna. It grow really slow in central Texas. I also grew a sweet sorghum from Baker Creek seeds. They do really well and grow all the way to 12 feet+. Got to chew lots of sweet stalks last summer.Sweet sorghum are my only treat when I was a kid. Roger: I really enjoy your post with so much rich information/background. when you say you have "purple,ribbon ,blueribbon, green chewing, ga. yellow and a couple of others". I just planted some a few months back -- it's doing very well. While researching it I read that you can buy sugar cane at the grocer. Cut it into 1' sections and put each section in the ground. I'm told it will root and grow just fine. I purchased this plant already rooted. I'm thrilled the stalks look as cool as they do I hadn't expected that. There are 2 common types of sugar cane grown in FL gardens, the green ones & the 'red' ones (actually closer to burgundy). I have the 'red' ones & they were hit bad by the many frosty days of last winter & rainless days of this summer. In our front yard, we are trying to build hedge of sugarcane-bamboo-sugarcane-bamboo. I scatter some Blackcow around them now & then & handwater when there's little rain. I also cut up their dried leaves & mulch them with it. The leaves have jagged edges so be careful if you have children & always use gloves when handling. Grandma use to tie gunny(hemp) strings around them in groups, then move the string upwards to hold all the leaves high up, over the children's head level. In tropical parts of Asia, we can get the juice freshly squeezed, chilled with ice. It is so refreshing & nice (& cheap!). I am looking for a small, manual cane roller-crusher but haven't had much luck. I know they make them in Brazil but they cost $$$.
