pygnostachys Urticifolia, 'Blue witches hats'

This has finally flowered! I posted a picture ages ago when I first bought it at a 'farmers' market. It's grown to about a metre (3 feet) and, as terminal ends to long thinish branches, these amazing flowers! Looks quite different in a normal garden setting and autumn light. The branches seem a bit weak, but overall, a worthwhile show.

Lovely. Now I have this flowers name.
Apart from Narcissus, blue flowers are my favorite.

Very nice colour Bill. Nice to see some brightness this time of year
We've had a litle rain but as most times need more. We're watching lots of
bulbs starting to push their spires thru the soil.The Chin Chins are a lovely
shade of green and very healthy and daffies hyacinths and other bulbs
on the way.We're wondering of course how such an early start is going to finish up.Time will tell.

What else is new? Well, my daughter spread seeds all over my yard... I don't know what seeds and where they were planted. So that will be new... So far she's pretty excited to see her basil seeds (planted this time in a pot) growing. My lavenders seeded themselves and there's several new seedlings scattered in the front yard. Same thing happened with the ladies mantle. I've been gathering them up to put them in individual pots. I think I may have enough for plant sale in the fall.. Either that, or I will have to splurge on a cold frame. Actually the idea of a cold frame is not bad. I need to divide some plants in the fall, including the siberian irises, shasta daisies, make cuttings of my hydrangeas... hmmn. Does anyone know where I can buy one? What else is new? A pair of tree swallows has taken over the bird house - so I will be seeing young birds in the near future. Got to go. I will try reposting that photo when I get home. Ianna

Oh, those are absolutely gorgeous! Thanks for the wonderful pics! I have a couple young Perovskias ('Blue Spire' & 'Little Spire'), and Artemisia californica (California sagebrush). I've tried Phlomis russeliana (it was possibly fruticosa), but the gophers got it before it bloomed. :( I bought a plant that was (wrongly) labeled merely "curly-leaf sage", or somesuch. Turns out it's Teucrium x lucidrys (germander). My mom has a young L. frutescens, so I hope it looks like the one in your pic some day! She also has a Lepechinia hastata, and the leaves have the most glorious scent! That's next on my "gimme" list. :D Brenda
