my african violets are not flowering :-(

hi everyone, i have some african violets that are not flowering, can anyone help me, they have good light and i water them when the dirt is dry, they are always nice and green but no flowers.......hope someone can help, thanks in advance

Hi Clarebear,
The most common cause of an otherwise healthy African violet not flowering is not enough fertiliser or, one with the wrong NPK ratio. Look for one that has an NPK ratio of 14 12 14 and follow directions on the label.

Hi Clarebear. How big are their pots? If the pot is too large, the plant will keep sending out roots looking for the sides of the pot rather than flowering. The pot should only be around a third of the diameter of the overall spread of the plant.

While it is a natural occurance for older plants to allow the outter layer of leaves to dry off and drop, it the leaves are rotting or full of water, this is another thing. More than likely if more than one or two are rotting, the plant is receiving too much water. Reduce watering and allow soil to dry out slightly before rewatering/fertiling. It sounds as if you have a decorative pot with insert. These were made to be filled with fertilized water and put the insert with plant into this water. This is supposed to allow the plant to take as much or as little water as it wants. My own experience with these decorative containers is that it keeps the plant too wet so it rots. You might transfer the plant to an ordinary plastic pot and see if the leaves continue to rot. Nancy

Where there's green, there's hope! First, give it water right away. If your plant has lots of leaves, remove the outer row so the plant doesn't need to spend energy reviving old unnecessary growth. Second, your plant needs to be "groomed" (remove dead flowers and their stems back to the main crown, clean the leaves, etc.)and repotted. Clicking the link below brings you to a photo-illustrated potting lesson. Use a pot that is 1/3 of the plant's post-leaf removal diameter since overpotting can kill the plant or delay blooming. Use a mix of equal parts of peat, perlite, and vermiculite. You can also buy African Violet soil mixes, but they are about half peat, so you'll still need to add more perlite and vermiculite. The different ingredient shapes and textures leave air spaces in the mix and keep it from packing down so the roots can grow really well. Carol - 2 systemic miticides are very efficient - and not as poisonous as Avid -it is Forbid and Pylon. Pylon is excellent for thrips as well - but it is very expensive and has a shelf life of 3 years. So -if you do not have them - do not waste your money. You can always buy it fresh as needed. I dragged my mites from AVSA in Raleigh. Why I think that Aniketa needs to restart the yucky plant - because no matter what she does - it will look horrible and distorted for a year- and if she restarts from a leaf - she will have new blooming plants in 6 months. I. PS Linda - I would say - if you are not as lazy as I - spray it twice. Irina And I sprayed everything with Pylon that was old.

Yes indeed! I've put AV blossoms in a vase myself now and then - especially when I've had to re-pot and couldn't bear to just throw the blooms away. I have a collection of tiny glass bottles that I recycled from maple syrup served in a well known chain restaurant hubby and I used to frequent in our many trips up and down I-75 and as mini vases they look quite pretty. A tiny bouquet of these AV flowers has lasted the entire week when carried into work. A good way to enjoy your AV's during the day if you can't bring in the whole potted plant to the office!

Mine flower almost constantly. I just stick a flowering grow-stick in twice a year, spring and autumn, and off they go. I think they're manufactured by Manutec and are readily available in places like K Mart.

I've had one plant the best part of 15 years, it's been repotted once I think. I've had two others for between 5 and ten years.

Unfortunately they have a big tap root which grows out of the pot and curls around which makes the plant a bit wobbly. I experimented with pulling the plant out and cutting off most of the tap root and repotted it. It looked poorly for a while, but then recovered.

They thrive on a bit of neglect. I think most die from overwatering. People put them on their kitchen windowsill and water them every time they think of it, until they're just a big bog.
