African Violets

African Violet with brown flowers green leaves

I got my AV a long time about probably 6 months ago and I haven't watered it in quite sometime I kinda forgot about it. Anyways it has brown flowers where they used to be a deep purple and green droopy leaves. Is there anyway I can revive it and make it beautiful again, if its dead I understand and I am okay with throwing it out I just wanted to see if there was anything I could do to get it "alive" again. Thank you very much.

Where there's green, there's hope!

First, give it water right away. If your plant has lots of leaves, remove the outer row so the plant doesn't need to spend energy reviving old unnecessary growth.

Second, your plant needs to be "groomed" (remove dead flowers and their stems back to the main crown, clean the leaves, etc.)and repotted. Clicking the link below brings you to a photo-illustrated potting lesson. Use a pot that is 1/3 of the plant's post-leaf removal diameter since overpotting can kill the plant or delay blooming. Use a mix of equal parts of peat, perlite, and vermiculite. You can also buy African Violet soil mixes, but they are about half peat, so you'll still need to add more perlite and vermiculite. The different ingredient shapes and textures leave air spaces in the mix and keep it from packing down so the roots can grow really well.

I bet that in no time your plant will be "alive" again and showing its appreciation with new purple blooms.

While it is a natural occurance for older plants to allow the outter layer of leaves to dry off and drop, it the leaves are rotting or full of water, this is another thing. More than likely if more than one or two are rotting, the plant is receiving too much water. Reduce watering and allow soil to dry out slightly before rewatering/fertiling. It sounds as if you have a decorative pot with insert. These were made to be filled with fertilized water and put the insert with plant into this water. This is supposed to allow the plant to take as much or as little water as it wants. My own experience with these decorative containers is that it keeps the plant too wet so it rots. You might transfer the plant to an ordinary plastic pot and see if the leaves continue to rot. Nancy

Springtails (if that's what you have) are generally of no harm to the plant. They feed on dead plant material, usually at the soil surface and will much prefer to munch on the peat in the soil mix than living plant tissue. Treating to kill them is likely to be harder on your plant than simply leaving things as they are. I wouldn't worry about them too much. From what I know, I don't believe that you will find one. It sounds like you bought a pure white baby from a variegated plant. Problem is all white leaves do not produce any Chlorophyll. It will grow fine as long as it is attached to it's parent leaf, but once separated it cannot produce chlorophyll(food) on its own. It sounds like the plant you got had just been separated from the parent leaf. Sorry.

av's do not like wet feet. difficult, but not impossible with gritty mix. at some point, you might want to pinch the flowers, and allow the plant to rest. you might also consider taking a leaf to start a new plant. check with the folks on the AV forum. Listen to irena ….
