I remember a mates Dad who had heaps up the side of his house in Geelong . They thrived for years until someone piled heaps of fertilizer on them .. oopps they did not like that .. check at Collectors Corner near the Frankston Freeway entry they had heaps when I visited ages ago .

Hi Kazzy, I'm in Melbourne and have a couple of Hoya here.
Well I hate to say it, but mine are outside (on the deck mind you) and one of them is about 10 years old now and thriving.
I have it growing up and through an old four tiered pot stand, and back down again, and up again ha ha ha.

I dare not move it, as thats when you'll find they throw a hissy fit.

If you can find a spot in a sheltered area on a deck or up the side of your house that they like, they will boom.

Keep them pot bound too, they love it. If you've ever put one in a big pot you'll soon know about it.

I dont fuss over my big one, about twice a year I'll give it a drink of seasol and top up the soil (as the soil sinks and settles.) That way I'm not disrupting any roots.

Where abouts in Melbourne are you?The reason is I was wondering is, how do they go with the frost in winter?
I have 36 at the moment living in two small greenhouses and so far they are doing fine,in one I have all the hoyas that like humidity with a heater in a tub of water to keep them warm and humid at night and then I open it up for fresh air during the days that are nice and sunny and in the other one I have the ones that can stand most any temp.
It is great to chat with someone from melbourne as our weather is quite different from the USA.

Hi again Karen, I'm from the outer East, just at the start of the Dandenongs.
We are slightly elevated here, and just on the side of the mountain.
we get an awful lot of wind and very little frost.

Your greenhouse set up sounds wonderful and just perfect for the humidity lovers.

I guess as with anything we grow on a tropical scale down here, we have to do a fair bit of coddling to provide the conditions they are used to.
But watch anyone try and talk us out of growing them hee hee.

My main passion is Bromeliads, and like I said above I do everything i can to re-create the environment suitable for their growing conditions.
I imagine its the same with your Hoya passion.

Karen , have you visited the hoya forum ? lots of good info there , I suppose you know that there are cool growing Hoyas that thrive in Vic , and also warm and tropical growing species that need protection . You may have got one from me on ebay recently !

Hi Aroideana, Could I please ask you if you for some Hoya info?I'm new to Hoya parent and have done everything wrong with my first one, poor plant. She is a Aeschynathus- Curly Lipstick Plant. Unfortunately I Didn't listen to my instinct and my own research and listened to others bad advice

She was a bit overwatered at the beginning but the main damage was from the moving and dirsect sunlight and wrong fertiliser.

it is out of direct sunlight, watering only when dry taken all pebble fertiliser out and rested before giving her some worm casting tea.

She is still a bit stressed but seems to have stabilised. I would like to spay her with season to encourage foliage regrowth but I am unsure if I should use the normal water seasol mix or should I water it down some more. Could you please tell me what ratio you use for your Hoyas.

i also have the more hardy leafy variety of Hoya. She is hanging by a window that is almost always open. Her flowers died after 3 weeks after we bought her. I would also like to ask you was that the normal blooming period for Hoyas or was it the move or the draft from the window? My thought process of handing near the window was that she was outside when I bought her so if she was near a window she wpuld at least get fresh air. But I'm not sure if that was wrong.
