Agree, the pods need to turn brown - watch them, or bag them with a length of nylon stocking and twist ties, so they don't crack open and spill the seed before you get to it. Note the suggestion to plant immediately after the pod has ripened. Orlando Sentinel, Mar 1997: Each cigar-shaped pod is more than a foot long and contains dozens of seeds. Wait until the pods start to crack before picking them. Then gather a few pods, and place them in a bag to open and release the seeds.Tabebuia seeds should be planted immediately in a loose potting mix. Ive never noticed them up here in the SF Bay as much as I did in Venice/Santa Monica in LA. Which varieties do well here? Do they grow tall? Can they be pruned so that they grow tall and stay narrow? I have a small front yard that is mandated to have a tree and I just cut down our existing one and am considering putting in a fig tree on both sides of the driveway. ( I started a separate thread in this subforum for it as well)

First, thanks everyone. I'm in z5, so Chorisia isn't hardy if planted in the ground, year round, right? So, my options are growing as a bonsai in or a large container? What size is large? 10" or larger? It's in a 3" pot now. To be honest, I have a few house plants growing as bonsais, but I've never root pruned..is pruning roots a big job? Are there certain roots that shouldn't be cut? One last question, lol. Would growing as a bonsai differ than if left in a standard, small pot? I don't understand the difference. What type of soil is best? For succulents, I normally use Succulent soil, Perlite and coarse sand, though I haven't been able to locate the proper sand. HD used to sell sand w/large, gritty pieces, but their sand is now generic, more like beach sand. Thanks again, Toni

Hi All. After reading everyone's posts, I thought, my Chorisia does resemble Pachira. So, I grabbed the Chorisia pot, brought it outside to compare to two Pachiras..One braided, the other a standard trunk. Unlike Pachira, Chorisia has serrated leaves. Little saw-like teeth surrounding leaf edges. Color differs, too. Pachiras are deep green. Chorisia is much lighter. Unless my Chorisia has a defiency...I have nothing to compare to. I Googled Chorisia pictures, but most are mature specimens/trees. lol. Lz, I scrolled up but couldn't find the height of your Chorisias. Have you measured? If so, what is their height? They look tall. Especially since you said you'd like to cut them down to a foot. Yep, when soil dries, leaves wilt fast. I repotted from a 3" clay to a 4.5" plastic pot because soil needed daily watering. Will you up the pot size or prune roots? I'd like to find a variegated Chorisia, if one exists. lol. Even though I vowed, no more plants. BTW, do you consider Chorisia fast-growing? Toni
